REINFORCEMENT FOR CUSHIONS OF POOL AND BILLIARD TABLES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK W. KELLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux City, in the county of VVoodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reinforcements for Cushions of Pool and Billiard Tables, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to pool or billiard tables, especially the former, and has for its object the provision of means for the repair or reinforcement of the cushion of such tables after they become hardened or worn by age or use. It is well known that age and the constant striking of the ball against the cushion hardens it, destroying its resiliency and wearing it away, rendering the whole table useless or subject to expensive repair.

My invention consists essentially in the application to a worn or hardened cushion of a reinforcement of rubber or rubber compound secured to the upper and lower edges of the cushion and projecting therefrom in a point having an annular longitudinal space. The effect of the hollow point upon the cushion is the same as that of the hollow space in a rubber ball, giving it resiliency and greater resistance and elasticity.

My invention must not be confounded with cushion or cushion strips having a hollo-w portion adjacent to the rail, as the efiect of the reinforcement is of a different charactor, as will be hereinafter pointed out.

I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a plan view of table rail and cushion with my invention attached. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of Fig. l and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of my invention ready for application and showing the strips for securing it.

Referring to the drawing in which like parts are designated by similar letters of reference, a is the rail of the table, I) the cushion and c and d my reinforcement of rubber or rubber compound, preferably vulcanized, placed over the edge of the cushion and consisting of a V-shaped piece having a round longitudinal opening 6 near the point, slotted or opening into the interior. The upper and lower arms of the piece are glued respectively to the upper and lower edges of the cushion, or otherwise suitably secured thereto. ther secured by end strips 7, formed integral with the upper and lower arms and at obtuse angles thereto, the strips being glued or otherwise suitably secured to the ends of the cushion and rail in each corner of the table, as indicated in Fig. 1.

My invention may be applied by anyone slightly skilled in the making of repairs to similar articles, is inexpensive in constructionand application and at the same time adds greatly to the utility and durability of the tables to which applied.

\Vhile the opening near the point of the piece is one of the features of the invention, the shape and relation of the same to the piece being also features, the shape of the piece and the position of the hollow part may be modified in various ways without departing from the principle of the invention itself.

. Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-

1. The combination with the cushion of a pool table of a V-shaped rubber piece secured to the point above and below the cushion and having a hollow, annular longitudinal space near the point opening into the interior of the piece, and means for securing the piece to the cushion and rail of the table.

2. The combination with the cushion of a pool table of a V-shaped piece secured to the point of the cushion and having a hollow annular space near the point, and strips integral with the piece at the ends thereof adapted to be secured to the cushion and rail in each corner of the table.
