Description
@teiten gisten atrat @Hirn MPROVED ELASTIG TIPS FOR LEGS 0E' FURNITURE'.
dige rlptnlenfcn'a tu in tlgcse tettat jntent mit mating nu nf tige sana TO ALL'WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, E. S. Tommi', ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and use -ful Improvement in the Mode of Attachment of India-Rubber Tips to Furniture Legs and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
The presen'.l invention relates to a novel mode of securing or. attaching an India-rubber or other elastic, exible, or soft tip or foot to the legs of chairs, sofas, and other articles of furniture, the object being to obviate the noise produced by chairs, tc., upon tile, marble, wood, and other floors, and also 'to prevent injury to thc carpet or other covering used upon floors. And this invention consists in securing the rubber tip or foot to and in a metallic or other suitable cup or socket, of such a construction and form, that, while it can be opened to receive and grasp the said rubber tip ori'oot, it can be inserted and secured in the leg of the chair or other article of furniture, as will be obvious from the followingr detail description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawings, in whicl1- Figure'l is an exterior slide view of the cup or socket, to receive the elastic tip or foot for being secured to the leg of a chair or other article of furniture; and i Figure 2, a central section through the saine, taken in the direction of its length, and showing it inserted in the log of the chair or other article of furniture.
A, ,in the drawing, represents the tip or foot for the legs of chairs or other articles of furniture, which tip may be made ot India rubber, or any other suitable elastic or liexible material, and is provided with a groove, a, around its periphery, on which lits the projecting edge or lip 6, formed around and upon the inside of a metallic or other suitable cup or socket, B, This cup or socket B terminates 'in a round stock or shank, C, and in the direction of its length is divided into two equal parts or pieces, so that, by opening the one from the other, the elastic tip or foot can be properly placed within the said cup or socket, when closing or putting the two together; it can be there secured and held by means of a ring applied to the stock of the said cup, or by screwing or riveting its two parts together, or in any other proper manner, or by screwing or in any other suitable manner securing the said shank of the cup or socket for the elastic tip or foot within the leg of a chair or other article otfurniture, as is obvious without any yfurther explanation ;I the rubber tip or its equivalent, when secured in the cup or socketiprovided to recciveit, being firmly held and retained, and in such a manner that, whether a greater or lesser degree of strain is brought to bear upon it by the use oi' the chair or other article of furniture, to the legs of which it is applied, as above stated, it cannot become loose* or detached therefrom, an advantage of the utmost importance, as well as a result which it has long been desired to obtain, but heretofore onlywith partial success. In lieu of forming the cup of detachable parts or pieces, it can be made all of one piece, but splitso as to be susceptible of being opened sufficiently at its socket end to allow the rubber tip to be inserted therein.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of soft elastic tips, and divided sockets, substantially as herein `set forth, for connecting said elastic tipswith furniture, as above described.
The above specilication of my invention signed by me this 31st day of July, 1866.
' E. S. TORREY.
