S. E. BASDEN. CURTAIN SUPPORT FOR BUGGIBS.
No. 565,321. Patefited Aug. 4, 1896.
ATTOHNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIDNEY EARL BASDEN, OF MEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
CURTAIN-SUPPORT FOR BUGGIES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,321, dated August 4, 1896. Application filed February 6, 1896. semi No. 578,179. on model.)
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, SIDNEY EARL BASDEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Medford, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ourtain-Supports for Buggies, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to buggy-tops, and particularly to the curtains thereof; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device or devices for connecting the curtains of the body portion with the top.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown my invention applied to the back curtain of a buggy-top; and said invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is aback view of a portion of the top of the buggy, showing the application of my improvement; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section through one of the fastening devices which I employ and showing also the method of operation, and Fig. 3 a plan view thereof.
Referring to Fig. 1, A represents the upper portion of the back of the top of a buggy, and B the buggy-curtain; and in the practice of my invention I provide a device or devices for securing the curtain to the buggytop, each of which consists of an oblong box or casing D, having a slot (1 in the top'thereof and a hole or opening d in the inner end thereof.
Mounted in the box or casing D is a sliding bar G, which projects through the hole or opening (Z and the outer end of which is provided with an eye or aperture g, and the inner end of which is provided with an arm g*, which projects through the slot cl in the top of the box or casing, and the eye or aperture 9 is adapted to be connected with a button H, having a shank h, by means of which it is secured to the curtain B.
In Figs. 2 and 3 A represents a portion of the buggy-top to which the box or casing D is secured, and secured to the inner end of the bar G is a contractile spring K, one end of which is secured to the box or casing D, and this spring operates to draw the bar G inwardly, and thus to stretch and securely hold in place the curtain B. Any desired number of these attaching devices may be employed, and in Fig. l I have shown three applied to the top of the curtain and a corresponding number to each side thereof, and by means of this device the curtain may be retained in proper form and prevented from wrinkling or drawing out of shape after it has been wet; and it will be apparent that the side attaching devices may be released whenever desired and the curtain rolled up in the usual manner, and all that is necessary in order to connect the bar Gwith the button H is to press outwardly on the arm g of said bar, and said parts may be disconnected in the same manner.
It is evident that this device may be employed for other purposes than for securing curtains to the tops of buggies, and my in vention is not limited to the application or use thereof as herein described.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The herein-described fastening device for buggycurtains and similar articles which consists in an oblong box or casing having a slot in the top thereof, and a hole or opening in one end, said box or casing being provided with a spring-operated sliding bar, one end of which projects through the end hole or opening in the box or casing, and is provided with an eye or aperture, and the inner end of said bar being provided with an arm which projects through the slot in the top of the box or casing and the outer end of the sliding bar being adapted to be connected with a button or other device, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in pres* ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 3d day of February, 1896.
SIDNEY EARL BASDEN. Witnesses:
CHARLES WARNER COBURN, HUGH D. FRASER.
