To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE F. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chalk-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to chalk holders for use in connection with pool and billiard tables, and has for its principal object to provide a device of this character adapted for receiving chalk and holding same against displacement by the pressing of cue tips thereagainst.

A further object of the invention is to provide a chalk holder of leather or like pliable material, which may be conveniently carried in an out of the way position near the table in connection with which it is used, which will yield to receive the chalk, and will not mar the table or scratch the tips while the latter are being chalked.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the following detailed description and the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference numerals relate to like parts throughout the several views: Figure I is a perspective View, showing the device before chalk has been applied thereto. Fig. II is a transverse section of the holder showing the chalk in position therein. Fig. III is a similar section, taken at right angles to Fig. II. Fig. IV is an elevation of a blank from which the holder is made, showing the chalk retaining flanges.

Referring more in detail to the parts: 1 designates a casing which is preferably formed from a single piece of leather or other pliable material, shaped to form a cylindrical body, and having perforated ears 2 at its opposite ends, which are adapted to lie close against each other when the holder is formed. The blank is grooved longitudinally on its inner surface to provide a recess 4, and rim flanges 5 at the outer edges of said recess which, when the holder is formed, form keepers for the chalk cylinder 6.

WV hen the holder is formed from the blank, the body portion is made tubular and of the proper size to hold a chalk cylinder snugly therein, and the ears brought together and stitched adjacent to the body portion, as at 7. \Vith the holder so formed, a chalk cylinder may be inserted into the holder from either end, and seat in the grooved recess 4, where it is held against displacement by the flanges 5, the material of which the holder is made being adapted to stretch to admit the cylinder, and to contract to its original condition when the cylinder has attained its seat in the grooved recess.

When the holder is to be refilled, the worn cylinder is pushed out over the keeper flange at the end of the grooved portion and a new cylinder inserted, the flanges being of leather or the like, being sufficiently yielding to admit the chalk cylinder under pressure, but as the pressure necessary to remove a chalk cylinder is much greater than that brought to bear on the cylinder when a one tip is being chalked, the cylinder will not be accidentally displaced.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:

1. A chalk holder comprising a casing formed from a blank of yieldable material, having its ends provided with apertured ears and having an inner recess adapted for receiving a chalk cylinder, and forming edge flanges for holding the cylinder in the recess, when the casing is formed, the said ears being adapted for engagement and being stitched together adjacent the apertured portions.

2. In a chalk holder, a casing formed from a blank of yieldable material having ears on its opposite ends, and having alongitudinal groove on its inner surface, said groove, when the casing is formed, providing a recess for receiving a chalk cylinder, the outer edges of said grooved portion forming flanges for keeping the chalk cylinder within the casing, substantially as set forth.
