Description

E, C. CLARKE. SLIDING PAD FOR BASE BALL PLAYER APPLICATION FILED MAY 24, 1911.
Patented Nov. 19, 1912.
FREDERICK c. CLARKE, or WINEIELD, KANSAS, assIdNoR' T- o a. e. -SPALDING e Enos., or JERSEY CITY, NEW .iErvsEEg-a CORPORATION oF NEW JERSEY'.
snimnearaii Een EASE-BALL rLAYEEs, ao.
i ,044,494. gpecinetion of To au; whom it may concern: l,
Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. CLARKE, a citizen of the vUnited States, residing in lliinfield, inthe State of Kansas, have invented certain new and usefiihl'mproveiiieiitsin Sliding-Pads for Base-Ball Play-' ers. &c., of `which the following is-a speciiieation. reference being had to the accom- -paiiying drawing, forming apart hereof.
For the protection' of the thighs of baseball players in sliding to base it is-usual to` pad quite heavily the ordinary baseball trousers. This adds to the expense of iiniforms because the cost (of each pair of trousers is increased by the' cost of padding. Furthermore, the padding detracts from the apvpe'araiice of the -rouseis and, again there is sometimes, in the act of sliding, a.slip'pingV between the padding and the person of the4 wearer producing 'some skin friction andv unpleasant. sensations.
Itis the object of this invention to pro vide a sliding pad which shall be free from the. objections to a pad which forms a part' of the trousers and to that end the pad is' foi-ined independently of the trousers and of any other garment-and is so formed asto avoid the unpleasant' skin friction in the act' of sliding. f L
The vinvention will be more fully ex plained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying` drawing in which it is llustrated and in which- Figure 1 is a View in front elevatonshow ing the sliding pad as it is worn and the supporter to which it is attached. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section. Fig. 3 is a view in elevationof the pad extended. Fig. 4. is a view.- in section on the plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Figtv.
The pad a-may be formed of any suitable material and may have any suitable sha. e. As shown in the drawing it, is generali rectangular, cut away in the rear, as lat;
Letters Patent. Patented Nov. 19, appnatio'nlaiea my 24, 1911. seiiai n0. 629,207.
. lIt. isi'shown as'formed of an .ordinarydtiuble quilted fabric c, padded with any suitable padding material d. Preferably, as shoiyn in Fig. 4; itl has a loose inner lining e, which.
'is free from thequilte'd pad except' at its edges .f where fitv may be stitched or other- -wise secured to the pad. This loose lining -c lies nearest. the person of the wearer-.so that in the act. of sliding, whatever' slip there may be is between the pad and' the lining, 1 i
rather than between the padv and the person ofthe ivearer. whereby the unpleasant burn'- ing sensation. ivhieh is dueto the slipping on the skin of the wearenis avoided.
The' improved pad is preferably formed by itself independent-ly ofany other garment, andis preferably arranged to be sup-ff ported by the usual supporter g, or any other similar vgai-nient adapted -to be secured-to the person',l preferably having buttonhole tabs i. to engage bi."=-ns`i' secured to 'the ordinary supporter. .i
" Tclaim asmy invention: j
1. The combination wlth agarment adapt- I edto 4be secured to the person, of av 'slid'in pad detachably secured to said garmentan extending around the greater portion thereof. a loose liningr secured only at its edges to said .pad, and said pad being generally rectangular in outline.
2.A The combination withagarment'adapted to `be secured to the person of a slidingl padl detaehably secured to said garment and. extending around the greater portion there-` of, a loose lining secured Vonly' at its edges to said pad,- and said pad being generally lrectan, rular in outline, and the-'lower rear portion thereof being cut away'.
This specification signed and 'witnessed this twentylsecond day of May, A. D., 1911;
l l FRED. C.CLARKE. Witnesses: i
J. W. omas, K. GUMAER.
