Description
waited 'States @met @Wm Letters Patent No. 103,646, dated May 31, 1870.
IMPRovnD SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
''he Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same` ence being had to the accompanying drawing making a part hereof, in which- Fignre l is'a sectional side elevation of a` detachedV potion f a bed-bottom embodying my improvements, an
Figure 2 a plan of the same.
My invention relates to that class of spring bedbottoms in which narrow slats are connected, at head and foot, with the inclined arms of coil springs, and consists in a device whereby each slat, it' bent or sprungdownward, may be inverted; in the combination of certain elements to form sections, and in the combination of the sections so formed. Each section consists of atop and bottom slat connected at each end by a leather, spring, and block. v
lhe construction and arrangement of the several sections being the same at both ends, only one end thereof is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which i The parts marked a a are the bottom slats.
b b' are blocks or elevations, arranged as shown, and made fast to such slats.
At each end ofthe several sections, and connecting the same, isa rod, c, passing through the blocks b'b,
and allowing snch sections to move laterally thereon.
d d' are set-screws, hearing on rod c, whereby the several sections are conined at any given point or distance apart.
c e are double-coil springs, the legs whereof enter vthe blocks b b', and the united arms whereof, projecting forward and upward, form eyes j' f', through which eyes pass the leathers g g', whereby the top slats h h' are connected with the springs.
Instead of attaching-the leathers g g' to the surface of slats h h', I make a horizontal slot in the ends of such slats, and confine therein, by nails or otherwise, theleat-hers g g', as in fig. 1.
Through vertical holes in slats h 71. I pass movable pins it', and provide both ends of such pins with heads, knobs, or projections. l
The leathers g g', after passing through eyes ff', hook or fasten onto pins t t beneath slats h h. "lo invert such slats, detach them from the springs, press on the projecting portions of pins t i till the vopposite ends thereof project from the opposite sides of slats h h', turn the slats over and attach them to `the springs as before, and this device may be used with a single or double-coil spring, and the pins 't 'i' may be made permanent and ixed in slats h h', without altering the nature or principle of the separate sections, considered as sections.
I am aware that spring bed-bottoms have heretofore been constructed in sections, and' I do not claim such a device, broadly, but confine myself to the sections, and the combination thereof', herein specified.
. Claim.
I claim as my inventiont The combination, by means of rods c andscrews d, of two 0r more sections, severally composed of slats a h, blocks 11, springs e, leathers g, and pins i, all con'- strnct-ed, ar ranged, and operating in the manner and for the purpose specified.
