Description

@sind Crimine.,
PETER'W. KNISKERN, 0F SMITH, ARKANSAS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOSIAH- S. TILTON, 0F SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI.
LettersPatent/No. 96,706, dated November 9, 1869.
IMPROVE-.D SPRING-BED BOTTOM.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making partici' the same.
To all whom 'itonay concern:
Be it known that I, PETER W. KNISKERN, of Fort Smith, in the county of Sebastian,- and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and-improved Spring-Bed Bottom; and I do hereby declare that'the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to-make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invent-ion relates to improvements in springbed bottoms, lthe object ot' which is to provide an improved spring-bed bottom, andto construct the samewholly or mostly of wood, land in a simple and inexpensive manner.
Figure l represents a plan view of my improved bed-bottom, and
Figure 2 represents a longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondingr parts. A v
I provide a vrectangular frame, composed of two side-pieces, A, ot' light wood, two 'transverse bars, B, at the ends, anda broad transverse bar, B, at the centre.
The two end-pieces B are provided with ribs b on each upper edge.
C represents the slats commonly used, which, according to my improvements, are united at the ends to the eross-bars D, at each end common to all, and each longitudinal bar or slat Gis provided with springs E at each end, rigidly secured thereto at the under side, and diverging from the said ends in the vertical plane of the said slats, as clearly shown in Iig. 2.
The inner ends of these springs nearly meet at or near a point below thecentre of the slats, in a manner to rest on the broad central bar B, whereby the frame, composed of the slats G and cross-bars D, will be supported considerably above the rectangular frame by the said springs, affording a very elastic' support for a ybed..
port to the end, serve to prevent the sides from yielding too much-in case the load rests near the sides.
The ends of the bars C may be strengthened, ,in their connection with the 'bars B, by metal, leather, or other bands or binding-strips, if desired.
The connection of the ends of the bars C with the springs is such that pressure thereon tends to cause the bars O to bow upward vbetween the ends, thereby counteracting the natural tendency of the said bars O, whenunsupported in the middle, to spring downward.
The result of' -this arrangement is to maintain the bars C in a levelor nearly level condition, no matter how great the load may be, thereby constituting a much more desirable bed-bottom than many which yield in thecentre.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The spring-bed bottom, consisting of the spring-bars C .and transverse end bars D, supported upon the frame A B B by means of the crossed end springs 11, resting with their free ends upon the boards B', and
' the springs E resting with their inner ends upon the central board B', all arranged as'described for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me.
Witnesses: PETER W. KNISKERN.
