Description

@wbmwm @MMWR '1 @Mmmm 104633 N N'ITED STATES ATENT `FFICE AUGUST w. OBERMANN, on Acifre/mo, .ILLiNois IMPnovEneizD-SPRINQ.-
t speciumuon forming partof Lette-rs Patent No. loesammd June 21, 1ero.
-.'Z'0 @ZZ whom,` it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST WM, OBER- itANN`, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State `of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Self-llastening Bedsprings, of
, which the following is a specification, reference being had-tothe aeeompanyi-ngdrawing. My invention relates 4to an improvement upon. the bed-spring for ,which Letters Patent were granted to John `Flinn July 31, 1866, No.
56.740;` and `it consists in so forming the lower coil of the spring, which rests upon the slat,
1 as i t0 give it a largerbearing, and thereby give the spring more stiffness sidewise and maintain it alwaysin an upright position.
The drawing represents aperspective of my improved spring in `position on a slat.
I construct my spring of ha single piece of @wire and ofdecreasing diameter from the top downward,` as is customary inothers; but instead of makingthe last or bottom coil round and of small diameter, as usual, I `bend it into the form of a rectangle, B, of nearly the full width of the slat, and then bend Vits end outward and downward, and provide it with the usual coil, c, andflarm Gr. The spring thus constructed I place in position on a slat, with the rectangle Bbearing thereon, and with the arm G passing around. under and bearing up against the same, as shown. When thus applied', the rectangle B maintains the spring always in an upright position, `and by reason of its broad bearing-surface prevents thespring from being tipped nr bent' to one side'when" weight is brought upon it, as constantly happens with the old style of spring having' the narrow base.
. I am aware that a spring has been 'made with a springarm to fasten it to the slat, alsothat a spring has been made with an enlarged base,
and secured permanently to the slat by a series of Y staples, and-therefore 'I do not claim such; but
Iiaving thus described ,my invention, what I Y claiml is- .An improved bed-spring, consisting of the conicallycoiled wire A, the enlarged rectangula' base B,'and the spring-arm G, all arranged substantially as described.
' AUGUST WM. OBERMANN.,

WM. H. LoTZ, Y ADoLPH ZELLER.
