UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES R. LEONARD, OF NEW ROCHELLE, NEW YORK.
GARMENT.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES R. LEONARD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New Rochelle, in the county of Testchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garments, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a garment of novel construction for insur ing a snug fit around the neck and, if so desired, around the wrists of the wearer to prevent the admission of rain, snow, dust or air, said novel construction including alternating elastic and non-elastic portions at a contracted opening, the elastic portions being in juxtaposition at said opening and diverging therefrom in the form of gores, and an encircling elastic band surrounding said opening, said elastic and non-elastic portions being turned over to form a housing for said elastic band.
The elastic encircling band is preferably made of metal such, for instance, as a metallic endless coil spring incloscd within a housing formed by turning over the free ends of the alternating elastic and non-elastic portions.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in whichn Figure 1 is a front view of a garment with my invention applied thereto. Fig. Q is an enlarged detail sectional view showing the manner of inclosing the encircling metallic elastic band within the housing formed by turning over the free ends of the alternating elastic and non-elastic portions, Fig. 3 is a detail section taken in the plane of the line AA of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows, and Fig. L is a section on an enlarged scale taken in the plane of the line B-B of Fig. l.
The body portion of the garment is denoted by l and it may be provided with a skirt 2 of any desired length to suit the particular requirement for which the garment is to be used.
The sleeves of the garment are denoted by 3, which sleeves have their free ends contracted so as to snugly embrace the wrists of the wearer. The neck of the garment is also contracted so as to snugly embrace the neck of the wearer. The garment is made of non-elastic material, preferably water- Speeification of Letters Patent.

proof, so as to serve its purpose as a protection from rain, snow, etc., as well as from dust and dirt. The neck of the garment is provided with a plurality of elastic portions l alternating with non-elastic portions 5. The elast-ic and non-elastic p0rtions are so shaped that the elastic portions are in juxtaposition at the neck opening and diverge therefrom in the form of gores extending into the garment for a considerable distance. These elastic portions are of sufficient length and size to permit the ready stretching of the neck for permitting it to be passed over the head of the wearer as the garment is put on and taken ofi'.
For the purpose of insuring a snug fit around the neck of the wearer for preventing the admission of rain, snow, dust or air, I provide an encircling elastic band 6 which is incloscd in a housing 7 formed by turning over the free ends of the elastic and the non-elastic portions. This encircling elastic band is preferably of metal, as, for instance, an endless coil spring which will retain its elasticity for a much greater length of time than will the rubber elastic portions of the garment. If so desired, each of the sleeves 3 may be provided with a similar construction, the elastic portions S alternating with the non-elastic portions 9 and the encircling elastic band 10 being inclosed in a housing 1l. In this construct-ion also, the elastic portions 8 are in juxtaposition at the sleeve opening and diverge therefrom as, for instance, upwardly into the sleeve for a suficient distance to permit the hand to be passed through the sleeve opening. The encircling elastic band (3 serves also to prevent undue stretching of the elastic portions at the neck or sleeve of the garment.
1. A garment having a contracted opening for embracing a part of the body of the wearer composed of alternating elastic and non-elastic portions, the elastic portions being in juxtaposition at the said opening and diverging therefrom in the form of gores, and an encircling elastic band surrounding the said opening, said elastic and non-elastic portions being turned over to form a housing for said elastic band.
2. A garment having a contracted neck composed of alternating elastic and nonelastic portions, the elastic portions being in juxtaposition at the neck opening and dias my invention, I have signed my naine in verging therefrom in the form of gores, presence of tvvo Witnesses, this 16th day of and an encircling elastic band surrounding June 1908.
