Description

G. BOCCIA.
Y COMBINED 00MB AND BRUSH.
n M #PLIUATION ILBD immo, 1911; y 1,017,501.- i Patented Feb.13,.1912.
CARMINE BOCCIA, OF NW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED 00MB AND BRUSH.
specification of Letters Patent.
Application led J une 2t), i911. Serial No. 634.254.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARMINE BOCCIA, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Combs and Brushes,. of which the following, is a specification. j
This invention relates to a combined comb and brush, and it has for an object to provide a device of this character wherein the back of the brush has mounted thereon for sliding adjustment a comb which` can be, readily concealed and housed by the brush back or adjusted thereon so as to be operatively exposed for use at one end of the brush when desired.
Another object of the invention is to pro` vide means for securely holding the comb against accidental displacement and for limiting the sliding adjustment thereof.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the sev-4 eral views: Figure 1 is a perspective view 0i' the combined brush and comb showing the comb in its extended position. Fig; 2 is a section through the back of the brush showing the comb in its folded position. Fig. 8 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section through a portion of the brush showing the comb withdrawn. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a slightly modified form of the invention. Fig. 6 is a section through a portion of the modified form of the brush.
The brush 1 shown herein may be of any suitable well known construction but is preferably provided with a fiat back 2 to Which the bristles 3 are secured. The back 2 is provided therein with a longitudinal groove 4 which opens at one end onto one end of the brush, at 5, the opposite end being closed, as shown, so as to form the stop 6. j
The comb 7 is slidably fitted in the groove 4. being slightly greater in length than the length of the groove so that when the comb is in its folded position as shown in Fig. 2,
one end of the same will protrude from one end ofthe back 2 so as to permit of its being conveniently grasped when it is desired to move the same to its operative combing position. The back 8 of the comb is spaced from the wall 9 of the groove 4 and yield,` ingly bearing thereagainst is the leaf spring 10 which latter is secured in any suitable well known manner adapted to resist the movement of the comb so as to prevent it from accidentally sliding in the groove and to retain the comb in its adjusted position. The back 8 of the comb is provided with a lug 11 which is slidable against the wall 9 of the groove 4. TheA spring 10 is disposed in the path of the lug l1 so as to engage the same when the comb is moved to its operative combing position and thereby limit the sliding movement of the comb and prevent it from being entirely withdrawn from the groove.
In the modified form of the inventionshown in Figs. 5 and 6, the comb 13 is provided with oppositely extending parallel rows of teeth 14 which are connected with each other by an intermediate portion l5. On the portion 15 is formed a lug 16 which is adapted to Ibe engaged by the free terminal of the spring 17 when the comb is in a withdrawn position .as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing. As= in the preferred form of the invention the spring 17 normally has Patented Een. 13, 191e. i
to the back 2; and .is
frictional engagement with the comb so as to hold the latter against displacement.
I claim:
A device of the class described comprising a head, a comb slidably mounted thereon, a spring bearingV against the comb to resist the sliding movement thereof, and means on the comb adapted to engage the spring so as to limit the, sliding movement of thccomb in one direction.
' In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CARMINE BOCCIA. Witnesses:
CARLOS W. BRUGAUD, GIUSEPPE BOCCIA.
