To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLARENCE M. DnAsoN, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at Carnegie, in the county of Caddo, State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Combs and Brushes; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to combination combs and brushes, and has particular reference to that type of combination articles in which the comb is embodied in the brush body for projection or retraction, as the needs of the user require.

The object of the invention is to simplify the construction of brushes of this type, and to provide one which may be readily dismantled for cleaning or inspection. To this end, have constructed the brush body with a removable back which cooperates with the body to form a dome or cavity into which the comb member is retracted, so as to be entirely clear of the bristles and also to be accessible for cleansing. lt should be mentioned at this point that the removable back Aalso forms a hand grip, which may be grasped, when the comb is in its operative position, to more effectively direct the latter through the hair.

With the above objects in view, and such others as may hereinafter appear as relating tothe details of structure, my invention will now be more fully set forth and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 1 represents the brush body, which is elongated at one end to provide the usual handle 2, and carries also the bristle body 3 in any of the well known or accepted man ners. Formed longitudinally of the body 1 is a slot 4, which continues into the handle portion 2 for a suitable distance, preferably terminating in the narrow portion of handle, just in front of the hand grip. Mounted in the slot 4 is the comb 5, which is a structure modified somewhat from the usual comb formation, in that the back thereof is widened throughout the length of the comb, and at a plurality of points, probably two, web portions 6 are continued downwardly from the back into the teeth. Formed in parallel relation and diagonally to the back, are the cam slots 7, which extend from the upper portion of the back downwardly into the web portions 6, so that a maximum elongation of the slots may be obtained.

The cam slots 7 are engaged by a pair of transverse pins 8 which traverse the slot 4, the pins 8 holding the comb in position, and co-acting with the slots 7 as the comb body is urged longitudinally of the brush body, t0 withdraw or project the comb teeth away from or through the bristle body. It will be noted that the direction and inclination of the slots 7 is such that the teeth of the comb will be practically fully retracted from the bristles when the comb is pulled rearwardly with rela-tion to the brush body, that is toward the handle 2, and that the teeth will be projected beyond the lower or free ends of the bristles when the comb is pushed forwardly.

Connected to the rez r end of the comb body is a pair of links 9, which lie on opposite sides of the comb and are connected by means of the rotary pin 10 having its journal in the comb back. The opposite ends of the links 9 arel pivotally connected to the ears 11 which are extended downwardly from a plate 12, the plate 12 being mounted upon a bridge-piece 13 whose feet are provided with longitudinall bearings 14 which are vertically elongated toa slight degree. The bearings 14`ride upon a rod 15 which is mounted to extend midway along the forward end of the slot 4, its forward end being fixed in the end of the slot and its rear end projecting freely therein. A head 16, which may be of any ornamental character, serves as a grip to slide the bridge-piece along the rod 15. The rod 15 is provided on its under side with series of teeth l5', and the lower ends of bearing slots 14 are edged to engage said teeth. To hold the comb body in its position of adjustment, a leaf spring 17 is secured into the forward end of the slot 4, and bears on the lower ends of the feet of the bridge-piece 13, so that as the latter is actuated from the head 16, to release and adjust the comb, the spring 17 tends to return the bearings 14 into engagement with the teeth 15.

The back 20 is made of any suitable material, such as metal, Celluloid or a molded plastic, and arches over the body Vl to provide a cavity 2l Within which the comb may enter When it is in its retracted position, this cavity permitting the teeth to be fully Withdrawn from the region of the lower or active portions of the bristles.V

The cover plate, when slid into position, fully incloses the body l and the comb mechanism, except the head 16 and that portion of slot 4 which it is necessary to leave uncovered for the operation of the latter. A set screw 22 is entered through the cover 20 and into the body l in order to hold the cover in place.

The manner of use of my improved device will be apparent from the foregoing description, but it should be particularly noted that the comb and brush are so related that each may be used Without noticeable eiect of the other on the hair. The back 2O is i'ormed to permit a ready grasp i of the body of the brush, so that when used With the comb projected, it may be more suitably and conveniently directed. The mechanism is simple, and can be embodied in any of the conventional forms of brushes, Without creating a bulky or unsightly article.

What I claim as my invention is l. A combined brush and comb, consisting of a body having a longitudinal slot formed therein, a comb mounted in said slot for projection and retraction beyond and into the bristle body of the brush, and means for actuating thecomb, and means to hold the comb in position at various degrees of projection.
