Description

ERNEST OSKAR KORN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Application fi1ed September 21', 1908.
T0 all w?wm z't mag concem:
Be it known that I, ERNES'I OSKAR KOHN, a subjeet of the Emperor 0f Austria-Hungary, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State 0f New York have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a speeification.
This invention relates to improvements in combs, and the objeet is to provide a simple and eifective deviee either in the form 015 an attaehment f01 the comb or as a part thereof by n1eans of vhieh ladies combs may be seeurely retained in the hair and prevented from aeeidental displacement.
Nith the above object in view, the invention eonsists in the nove1 features 0f 0011- struction hereinafter fu]ly deseribed, partieularly pointed. 0ut in the elaims, and elearly illustrated by the aecompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspeetive view illustrating one form 0f my invention apphed to a comb, showing the manner of its use; Fig. 2, a p1an view of the guard detaehed from the c0mb; Fig. 3, an enlarged view 0f an edjustable guard; Fig. 4, a similar view of another forma of edjustable guard; Fig. 5, an enlarged sectional view 0f the guard shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 6, a si1nilar view 0f the guard shown in Fig. 4; Fig. 7, an enlarged plan view of a fonn of guard somewhat similar to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and Fig. 8, a perspeetive view of a comb having my improved guard formed es a permanent pa1t thereof.
My invention consists in providing the comb with a guard-member l, which may be fonned as a part 0f the eomb, permanently attached thereto, 01 separately f0r detaehable eonnection. This guard forme substantially a 100p through which a heir-pin 2 is inser ted, seid hair-pin entering the hair and serving to hold the comb securely in the hair 0f the wearer.
The guard shown in Figs. 1 and 2 consists 0f a bar having at each end a lug 4 whieh is perforated. The guard is attaehed to the comb by inserting the adjacent teeth 01 prongs of the latter in the perforations of the lugs' and then moving the guard upwardly to the desired point. The teeth of the comb being formed tapering, the gumd when moved upwardly is held tightly.
The guard shown in Fig. 7 is si1nilar t0 that Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1909.
Serial N0. 453,946.
above deseribed, except instead of the lugs 4, the ends 0f the bar are bent to form guides 5 t0 receive the teeth of the comb.
In Figs. 3, 4, 5 und 6, I have shown an adjustable guard. That shown in Figs. 3 and 5, consists of two guard-members 01 sections 6 having their outer ende bent to inclose the teeth 0f the c01nb and their inner ends movab1e in 21 tubular casing 7. These gu2udseetions are normally held at their minimum extension by a eoiled spring 8 placed in the casing and attaehed at its ends to the sections. They may be separated or extended against the tension of seid spring, and their movement is limited by pins 9 moving in slots 10 formed in the casing near its respeetive ende.
The adjustable guard illustrated in Figs. 4 and 6 comprises two guard seetions 11 formed at their outer ende with perforated lugs 12 and at their inner ends movable in a tubuler casi1ig 13. These members may thus be adjusted to vary the distance between the perforations of the lugs according to the teeth Of the con1b 011 whieh the guard is used as in the case 0f the guard shown in Figs. 3 511d 5 and hereinbefore described. The inner ends of the guard sections within the casing overlap andere be\*eled es shown in Fig. 6, and seid sections are held in the desired adjustment by a set-screw 14 carried by the casing and bearing against the 0Ve1L ping ends.
The guard 15 shown in %ig. 8 is a permanent part of the comb. It may be formed either es a part thereof or attaehed thereto in son1e permanent n1anner.
The guard may be formed. 0f any preferred material and made very attraetive so es t0 be ornamental, and by its use ladies combs may be securely held so as t0 prevent l0ss er breaking by accidental dropping from the hair, and et the same time the eonstruction 0f the guard is such that it may be readily ap plied t0 the comb and Will not interfere with the ready insertion and withdmwal of the latter from the hair.
Having thus fully deseribed my invention what I elaim es new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A gua1d for combs f01 the purpose set forth comprising a bar provided at its ends with .means f0r engaging the teeth of the eomb for detachable connection thereto.
2. A guard for combs for the purpose set forth comprising a bar provided at each end with perforated lugs f0r receiving the teeth of the comb.
3. A guard for combs for the purpose set forth comprising a bar having means at each e11d for engaging the teeoh of the comb, and means for varying the distance beuween said engaging-means.
4. A guard for combs for the purpose seo forth comprising a casing, and members having their inner ends movable in said casing and formed at their outer ends to engage the teeth of the comb.
5. A guard for combs for the purpose set forth, comprising a casing, members having their inner ends movable in said casing and formed ab their ouner ends '00 engage ehe teeth 0f the comb, and means for holding said members in the desired adjustment.
A guard for combs f0r ehe urpose set forth comprising a casing, memers having their inner ends movable in said casing, said inner ends being beveled and overlapping, and having their outer ends formed with means to enga'ge the teeth 0f the comb, and a set-screw carried by ehe casing and engaging said overlapping ends of the members for holding them in the desired adjustment.
In bestimony whereof 1 affix my signature, in presence of tw0 witnesses.
