COMBINED NAPKIN RING AND HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 2, 1908.

COMBINED NAPKIN RING AND HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 18, 1908.
Application filed March 2, 1908. Serial No. 418,747.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, CORNELIUS J. DALY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Napkin Ring and Holder; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to napkin rings and to napkin holders and has for its object to provide a single article which may serve equally as well for an ornamental and efficient napkin ring and for a comfortable and eflicient napkin holder.
For these and other objects which will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel combinations, and arrangements of parts of which the herein-described article is one of many possible embodiments.
I/Vhile herein I mention many details, I do not limit myself to these as the same may be greatly varied without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
In the annexed drawing, forming a part of this specification andwhich are for illustrative purposes only and therefore not drawn to any particular scale and in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the holder in closed position, adapted to be used as a napkin ring; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holder in open position adapted to be used as a napkin holder and showing a portion of the napkin held therein.
As shown, my napkin holder comprises an elongated strip of metal, 1, having its ends curved as at 2, or otherwise finished so as to present a neat appearance and so that the ends thereof will not present sharp edges or corners. Intermediate the ends of said strip and extending nearly to said ends, I provide a narrow slot 3, which forms said strip into a pair of holding members 4, adapted to grasp therebetween a portion of a napkin 5, or the like. The plate, 1, may be made of any suitable material, such as tortoise shell, gutta percha, celluloid, spring metal or any material desired and is preferably made elastic and bent so that normally it will assume the position shown in Fig. 1, in which position it is adapted to be used as a napkin ring, as will be apparent.
In order to use the holder as a napkin holder, I pass a portion of the napkin through the slot 3, the members 4 serving to hold the same in position and thenthe ends 2 are separated sufficiently to permit the holder to be passed around the neck of the person wearing the same, after which the ends 2 are released and assume substantially the position shown in Fig. 2. IVhen the holder is in this position, the napkin will hang down in front of said person, thus acting as a shield.
By making the holder of Various colored materials or of various metals, a very attractive and ornamental napkin ring is formed.
It is thought that the operation and advantages of my invention will be understood without further explanation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A combined napkin ring and holder comprising a strip of resilient material having a slot extending longitudinally thereof to form napkin holding means, said strip being constructed to normally form a spiral and adapted to be opened out to form a collar.
2. A device of the class described comprising a strip of resilient material, normally in spiral position to form a napkin ring and means carried by said strip to hold a napkin, said strip being adapted to be opened out to form a collar.
3. A strip of resilient material having curved ends and a slot therein extended nearly from end to end, said slot forming holding members adapted to engage a nap kin therebetween, said strip being shaped to normally form itself into a spiral whereby is produced a napkin ring, said strip being also adapted to be opened out to pass around the neck of the person wearing the same.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CORNELIUS J. DALY.
Witnesses H. MUHLsoI-ILEGEL, EMIL SoHNELL.
