2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
, Y a %Vmm% mam ang - tion being to provide carica- JOHN A. GUZMAN, OF ELTON, LOUISIANA COMBINATION -SHEARS To all'whom it may concern:
Be it known "that I, JOHN A. GUZMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elton, in the parish of Calcasieu and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Shears, of which the following is a specificatlon.
This invention relates to an improvement in shears, the primary shears which may be used either as button-hole shears or the ordinary type of shears.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide means for regulating the tension.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of the shears. Fig. 2 a view showing the same open and in position to use the blades as cutting members. Fig. 3 a view showing the blades in position to be used as buttonhole shears. Fig. 4 a detailed view showing the blades separated. Fig. 5 an edge view of the shears. Fig. 6 a detailed view of the tension regulating member, and Fig. 7 a detail view of the thimble supporting member. Fig. 8 is a detailed view of the two part screw, partly in section.
In the drawings: 10 designates one of the blade members, said member having secured thereto a spring plate 11 which is substantially U-shaped. embracing the pivot portions of the blades, the enlarged end portion 12 being adapted to engage the blade memher 13, a screw 14 being adapted to extend through the plate 11 and the member 10 to Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed September 17, 1910. Serial No.
object of said in-venof the apertures,
engage the blade member 13, the rounded end portion of said screw being in register with an aperture formed in the U-shaped member, the portion of said screw adjacentsaid rounded portion being squared. In order to hold the blade members together. a set screw 15 enters the threaded aperture in the U-shaped member, said member being provided with a hollow interiorly threaded barrel adapted to receive the end portion of the connecting screw. As the screw 15 is tightened, the end portion of the U-shaped member will be forced in engagement with the blade 13, thus drawing the blades together.
The blade 13 is provided with a plurality of apertures 16 and 17 which are connected by a slot 18, the shears being adapted to out i in the usual way when the screw rests 1n the aperture 16. It will be seen that by arrangmg the blades at right-angles to each other the blade 13 may be shifted in order to allow the pin to rest in the aperture 17. lVith the blade in this position, the set screw 18 will engage the bowed portion of the U-shaped member thus limiting the stroke of the blades in order that the same may be used to cut button-holes. It will be noted that the set screw will effectually lock the blade members in either one or the other the shifting of the bladm being accomplished quickly and conveniently by releasing said set screw. A thimble retaining device 20 is looped around a retaining screw 21 said device being provided with the spring jaws 22 which-engage the thimble. One of the handle sections is provided with a barrel adapted to receive needles said barrel being closed by the cap for screw 24.
The many advantages of a construction of this sort will be clearly apparent as shears constructed .n this manner may be conveniently changed from the ordinary type of shears to button-hole shears, without taking the same apart. Itwill also be noted that the tension regulating device is an integral part of the shifting mechanism, the shears being at a proper tension when the blades are tightened to either position.
hat is claimed is:
1. A pair of shears comprising blade members, a resilient U-shaped member secured to one of said blade, sections. a screw passing through said member, said screw being adapted to enter the other blade memher. said other blade member being provided with apertures connected by an elongated slot. said screw having reduced portions adapted to slidein said slot. when the blade members are at an angle. a set screw supported by said U-shaped member, said set screw being adapted to engage the end portion of the eonnecting screw to lock the members together.
2. A pair of shears comprising blade members. a U-shaped member secured to one of said blade memberssaid U-shaped memher being adapted to embrace the other blade member. a screw passing through one end of said U-shaped member and both blade members, one of said blade members being provided with apertures connected by Patented Oct. 24, 1911.
