To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that EDGAR H. ALLIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dividers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in dividers and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the arms of the instrument have their opposite end portions ofiset to make pOssible the use of a full length pencil or kindred marking implement.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character with novel and improved means whereby a pencil of extremely short length may be operatively secured to an arm of the instrument.

An additional object of the invention is to provide a novel and. improved device of this general character wherein a single member or nut is employed to effect a fine adjustment of the arms.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved divider whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

Thenovel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

As disclosed in the accompanying drawlngs, A and B denote the arms of the instrument which are connected by and turn upon a common pivot l. The pivoted end portions a of the. arms A and B are angularly related with respect to the outer portions 6 of said arms A and B and the outer portions Z) of said arms A and B are ofiset with respect to the portions 64 and in the same direction so that the portions a will offer no hindrance or obstruction to the opposed faces 0 of the arms A and B. The opposed faces 0 of the portions 5 entirely therealong are provided with grooves to receive the penoils P or kindred writing implements. By having the portions 64 and b of the arms A and B offset as just described it is possible to employ with either of the arms A or B a pencil of full length as clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

The portion a of the arm A immediately adjacent the junction with the portion 7) is provided therethrough with a slot 2 through which is directed an arcuate wing or guide arm 3. One end portion of the wing or arm 3 is continued by a threaded cylindrical stem 4: which is freely disposed through an opening 5 formed in the portion a of the arm B closely adjacent to the junction of said portion a with the portion 6 of the arm B. An opening 5 intersects a slot 6 dis posed through said portion a of the arm B in which is positioned a thumb nut 7 threaded upon the stem 4, the milled periphery of the thumb nut extending beyond opposite faces of the portion a of the arm B sufiicient to enable the nut to be turned by the fingers. The arcuate wing or guide arm 3 is flat and oo-acting with said wing or guide arm is a clamping or set screw 8 in threaded engage ment with the arm A and having contact with a face of said wing or arm 3.

In order to set the arms A and B the clamping or set screw 8 is loosened and the arms A and B opened or closed to approximately the proper relative positions whereupon the clamping set screw 8 is tightened upon the wing or guide arm 3. The required fine adjustment of the arms A and B is accomplished by turning the thumb nut 7 to move the stem 4 in the desired direction.

In the present embodiment of my invention I show a pencil P or kindred marking implement engaged with the arms A and B although it is to be understood that if desired a conventional divider point or finger may be employed. The arm A, as herein illustrated, has associated therewith a pencil P of a relatively short length and said pencil is held in applied position through the instrumentality of a loop screw 9 through which a pencil P is disposed and which loop is provided with a threaded shank 10 directed through the arm A and with which is engaged a clamping nut 11. The outer portion of the loop screw 9 is defined by an elongated extended web or collar 12 arcuate in cross section and which provides an increased surface for the requisite clamping action upon the applied pencil P.

The arm B, as herein disclosed, has acsociated therewith a pencil of full length Which is disposed through a loop screw let provided with a threaded shank 1.5 directed through the arm 13 and with which shank 15 is associated a clamping nut 16. It is to be understood that the pencil P associated with each of the arms A and B is also re ceived within a groove face 0 of the arm and that the portions of said groove adjacent the loop screw 9 or 14 are recessed to assure the proper functioning of such loop screws.

With the use of the particular type of loop screw 9 it will be readily understood that the pencil P can be used to a length of substantially one inch.

From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a divider constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modilication without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim:

1. Dividers comprising two pivotally connected arms, the pivoted end portions of the arms being laterally offset with respect to the opposite end portions thereof, and coacting means carried by each of the arms for clamping a marking implement to said opposite end portions thereof.

2. A divider comprising relatively movable arms, a loop screw carried by one of the arms and through which a marking implement is adapted to be inserted said screw having a cylindrical portion extending parallel to and spaced from the arm carrying said screw to engage the marking implement inserted through the screw.
