Description

i atentcd Sept. l9, i922.
l ilzdfit FFEQE.
ROSCOE lt. PAFFORD, OF WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS.
ADJUSTABLE sevens Ann MITER.
Application filed January 9, 1920, Serial No. 350,397. Renewed March 17, 1922. Serial No. 544,693.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Roscoe R. PArroRD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vi ichita Falls, in the county of lVichita and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Squares and Miters, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has for an object to effect improvements in adjustable squares and miters, and aims particularly to effect improvements in the clamping devices for adjustable members in such appliances. An important aim of this invention is to provide securing means for adjustable members which will be contained within elements of the device, so as to be protected against casual operation or disturbance. It is a further aim to give a construction in the adjustable parts and the clamping means which will insure strength and security in the relation of the parts.
Additional objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary side view of a combination IT-square and miter, constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing one of the adjustable miter elements free, and moved from closed position,
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal section on the line 38 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of one of the miter elements.
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view of the stem of the device on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a perspective View of one of the clamping devices.
There is illustrated a tool comprising a stem or body port-ion 10, which includes two edge rails 11 with a connecting web portion 12 therebetween giving this part oi the device somewhat the shape of the letter I in cross section. The body portion 10 may be formed of metal if desired, or partly of metal and partly of wood, as found preferably. Adjacent the head of the stem an opening 13 is formed therethrough, into which are projected clamping screws 14, two on each side of the medial longitudinal plane of the body, and a central screw 15,
the latter being slidable centrally through the end portion of the body 10 longitudh nally, while the first mentioned screws are formed integrally with the body 10, or may be secured thereto. Upon the projected ends of the screws 14 and 15 within the opening 13, there are engaged thumb nuts 17. At their opposite ends, the screws 14 and 15 are formed with lateral bills 18, projected at right angles to the screws, the purpose of which will become apparent. The end of the body 10 adjacent the parts last mentioned is provided with a kerf or channel 19 thereacross in the medial plane of the body 10 and the bottom of the channel is formed accurately at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the body 10. Slidable in the kerf there is a blade 20 having a slot or channel 21 in one side receiving the bill of the screw 15. In this manner the blade 20 may be adjusted to project at any desired length at either side of the body 10. Miter arms 23 are pivoted on the body 10 beside the blade 20, these arms being four in number. Each of them is L-shaped in cross section its flanges being projected over the faces of the adjacent rail 11. They are pivoted at the ends of the body 10 which extends across the blade 20 for the major portion of its width. Carried by the arms 23 there are sectors 24, engaged through slots formed in the rails 10, each sector having a slot 25 therein concentric with the center of the sector, in which the bill 18 of a respective screw 14 is engaged. The head portion 26 of the body 10, located outwardly of the opening 13 is recessed to receive one of the sectors 24, while the other one slides freely over the surface of the head portion between the rails. A suitable scale is formed on each sector coordinated with the inner edge of the rail 11 thereadjacent so that the point at which the edge of the rail intersects the scale will indicate the angle at which the attached arm 23 is disposed With respect to the body 10 at any position in its movement.
By the use of the nut 17, the miter arm 23 may be secured in closed position as well as at any adjusted position. The screws 14 engage over the sectors 24, so that the latter are held against displacement from their positions against the head portion 26.
What is claimed: 1. An adjustable square and miter comprising a body portion having a sl dable blade ther aeross formed With a lqngl I a body element having a head portion With a finger opening therethrough, a miter arm pivoted'on the body and having a' sector respective members enplate slidable through the body, a sleeve on the body, a longitudinal screw reciprocable in the sleeve and having a laterally turned bill, said sector plate being slotted concentrically with the pivot of said miter arm and receiving said bill in the slot for clamping-the sector, and a nut on said screw Within the finger opening by Which said bill may be drawn into clamping engagement With one edge of said slot. In testimony whereof I have affixed. my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
