Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1916.
Application filed November 24, 1914. Serial No. 873,699.
This invention relates to scissors, more particularly of the button-hole type, and has for its object to provide a pair of scissors, with means in a manner as hereinafter set forth, to permit of a pair of button-hole scissors to be employed in a manner as ordinary scissors.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a pair of scissors which are simple in construction and arrangement, strong, durable, eflicient in use, readily adjustable and inexpensive.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
Figure l is an underneath view of my improvement, showing the screw for interrupting the opening movement of the blades projected for that purpose. Fig. 2 is an un- V derneath view of the scissors with the blades in the closed position. Fig. 3 is a top view of the scissors with the blades in the closed position. Fig. 418 a section taken on the line &5, Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow, showing the screw for interrupting the opening movement of the blades projected for that purpose. Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 45, Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow, showing the same screw retracted to permit the free opening of the blades.
shoulder 6. Formed integral with the shank 2 is a blade 6 and the latter is pivotally connected to the blade 5, by a pivot 7 The blade 5, as well v as the blade 6, near the pivot 7, is formed with a rectangular notch S which opens at the cutting edge 9 of each' blade; The notch 8 of the blade 5 is oppositely disposed with respect to the notch 8 of the blade 6.
The foregoing construction of elements, is the ordinary way of setting up a pair of button-hole scissors.
The flat edge of the blade 6 has projecting therefrom a lateral extending lug 10, which is formed with an opening 11, having a screw threaded wall and adj ustably engaging with the threaded wall of the opening 11, is a headed screw 12.
Adjustably engaging with the shank 1, as well as extending laterally therefrom, is a headed screw 13, which constitutes a stop and limits the cutting stroke of the blades.
When the screw 12 is adjusted to arrest the opening movement of the blade 6, the scissors can then be employed as an ordinary pair of scissors, but when the screw 12 is adjusted so that it will not engage the blade 5, during the opening movement of the blade 6, the scissors then are used as a pair of button-hole scissors.
The screw 12 is preferably so located with reference to the pivot 7 that a line (see 4.5, Fig. 3) intersecting the axis of the pivot 7 at right angles to the blades when closed, will also cut the axis of the screw 12. In any event, the screw must be so located that when projected as shown in Fig. 4 to interrupt the opening movement of the blades (see Fig. 1), such interruption shall occur before the corners of the blades forward of the buttonhole recesses are separated or disengaged from each other. It is evident that if the screw 12 were located considerably beyond the line 45, Fig. 3, in the direction of the point of the blades, the screw 12 could not be projected to interrupt the opening movement of the said blades in time to ac complish the aforesaid function What I claimis:
1. Scissors, comprisinga pair of blades pivotally connected together, the cutting edge of each blade having a notch formed therein and the said notches being oppositely disposed with respect to each other, a handle for each blade, a lug formed upon one of said blades and projecting laterally therefrom in proximity to the pivot of the blades, and an adjustable element extending through said lug and adapted to engage the other of said blades for limiting the opening movement of the blades With respect to each other.
2. Scissors, comprising a pair of blades pivotally connected together, the cutting edge of each blade having a notch formed therein and the said notches being oppositely disposed With respect to each other, a handle for each blade, a lug formed upon one of said blades and projecting laterally therefrom in proximity to the pivot of the blades, and an adjustable element extending through said. lug and adapted to engage one edge of the other of said blades for limiting the opening movement of the blades With respect to each other.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in the presence or" tWo Witnesses.
