" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.J. ALBERT SCHMIDT, OF NEW YO R -N. Y.
NIPPERS FOR OPENING BOTTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,982, dated May 16, 1852. Application filed March 16, 1882. (No model.) Patented in Germany January 9, 1882, No, 16,578.
T all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, J. ALBERT SCHMIDT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nippers for Opening Champagne-Bottles, of which the. following is a specification.
This invention relates to improved nippers for cutting the threads and wires of champagne or other bottles at one operation and it consists of handles which are pivoted at their outer ends and provided near the pivot with arc-shaped portions having cutting-knives and as shown in Fig. 1, or made in one piece with the arc-shaped portions B B,as shown in Fig. 2. The handles A A may be provided with a spring, b,a regulating set-screw, d, and alocking-hook, e, at the lower end of the handles, of which the setting-screw is used for adjusting the nippers for larger or smaller bottles;
but these devices are not essentiahand may be dispensed with, as shown in Fig. 2. The handles A A are further provided .with short auxiliary wire-cuttin g nippers D .l),which extend beyond the pivot a, and which are used in case any one of the cutters 0 becomes unfitfor use, or in case any one of the wires should not be cut by the cutters.
For using the nippers thecutting-knives are placed in position on the bottle a short distance belowits inonth,and then the fastening wires or twine cut by pressing the handles together. In this manner all the wires and the twine are cut at the same time, and thereby the troublesome cutting of the same with the present means dispensed with.
Having thus described myinventionflelaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, a pair of nippers for cutting the cork-fastening wires and strings of bottles, the handles ot' which are bent into arc-shaped portions adjoiningthe nippers and provided with cutting devices concentric to the arc-shaped p0rtions,substantially as set forth. i
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J. ALBERT SCHMIDT. Witnesses PAUL .GOEPEL, CARL KARP.
