UNITED STATES PATENT UW l QE.
BUTTONHOLE SCISSORS.
Application filed September 11, 1920. Serial No. 409,601.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURA A. LIoHToAP,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buttonhole Scissors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cutlery, particularly to scissors, and has for its object the provision of a novel button hole scissors having the blades formed V-shaped longitudinally whereby when the blades are brought to ether to effect a cutting action the blades Wil cut an equal distance to-each side of 1 the point of initial engagement of the blades with each other, thereby eliminating the short lateral tear formed by the square shoulder of the blade of the ordinary button hole scissors.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which being formed as above described, will enable more accurate gaging of the position of the button-hole as the initially contacting points of the cutting edges may be readily engaged at the center of a hem or the like, thus enabling the user to form a series of cuts of the same length so that the button-holes will be uniform, the device being provided with a stop screw at the handle portion for limiting the degree of relative movement of the blades so that uniformity in the lengths of the cuts may be insured.
An additional object is the provision of button-hole scissors of this character which will not only be simple and inexpensive in manufacture but which will be easy to use, efiicient in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which The figure is a side elevation of scissors constructed in accordance with my invention.
of the blades 10 and 11.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numerals 10 and 11 designate the blades which are arranged in cross relation and pivoted, as Shown at 12, and which terminate in handles 13 and 14 formed as loops. The handle 14 is formed with a rectangular notch or recess 15 and mounted Within this recess is an adjusting screw 16 adapted to be engaged by the handles 13 whereby to limit relative movement of the blades toward each other.
The essential feature of my invention is the peculiar formation of the cutting edges These cutting edges are identical and each is formed V- shaped longitudinally, as shown at 17 The points 18 of these V-shaped portions of the blades are arranged in exact alignment so that they may be used as a gage for the center of cut to be made so that when the blades are brought together by movin the handles toward each other the inclined cutting edges 19 will cut the same distance at each side of the center point of initial engagement of the points 18 with the fabric to be out. The length of cut is regulated by adjusting the screw 16 in the ordinary manner.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
Buttonhole scissors comprising a pair of pivoted blades each having a substantially triangular cutting blade each of said cutting blades comprising cutting edges of equal length the apices of said cutting blades meet to provide initial cutting of material and to permit equal cutting of the material in each direction from the initial perforation by the points.
In testimony whereof I affix m signature.
LAURA A. L1G TCAP.
