Description

' N. w, RAGE.
BARBERS SHEARS.
APPLIOATION FILED NOV. 25, 1908.

, flboholas iwze wit "mu v I v I v c; M e 6.: I atkwnu d NICHOLAS w. RAGE,
PATENT orinon.
OF CODY, WYOMING.
BARBERS SHEARS.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS W. RACE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cody, in the county of Bighorn and State of Va yoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbers Shears, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shears and more particularly to barbers shears, and has for its object to provide a pair of shears of the type having one relatively long handle and one relatively short handle, in which the short handle will be adjustable to suit the 7 hands of different operators.
Another object is to provide a pair of shears including this feature which will be extremely simple and thus cheap.
Other objects and advantages will be ap parent from the following description, and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the present shears, showing the adjusting screw. Fig. 2 is a view showing the opposite side of the shears.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a pair of shears having an upper blade 5, provided at its rearward end with a rela tively long handle 6, having a finger receiving loop 7 and a rearward lip 8 for the reception of the little finger of the operator.
Pivoted to the blade 5 in cross relation thereto, there is a lower blade 9, having an upwardly and rearwardly directed finger 10 at its rearward end. At the outer end of the finger 10 there is an opening 11, in which there is engaged a pivot pin 12.
Pivotally mounted upon the pin 12, there is an adjustable thumb loop 13, having a downwardly and forwardly directed sector 14 formed integral therewith. lhe neck 15 connecting the sector with the loop 13 receives the pivot pin 12-, and formed in the sector concentric with the pivot pin, there is an arcuate slot 16, receiving the stem. 17 of a clamping screw 18, this stem being engaged in a threaded opening 19 formed in the finger 10, the screw being thus operable to hold the loop 13 at different points of its pivotal movement upon the pin 12. The
Specification of Letters Patent.

sector 14 is somewhat thinner than the remainder of the loop member, and the relatively thicker portion has a shoulder 19 located for engagement of the upper portion of the finger 10 to limit the movement of the thumb loop 13 toward the finger loop 7. The sector 14 lies against what may be termed the inner face of the finger 10, by which is meant that face of the finger which is directly toward the blade 5. The sector thus lies in the plane of the blade 5, and the portions thereof thus do not project beyond the side of the shears to become entangled in the hair.
What is claimed is 1. A air of barbers shears comprising crossed lades pivotally connected, one of said blades having a lower rearwardly eX- tended. finger loop, and the other blade having an upwardly and rearwardly directed finger, a thumb loop pivoted upon the finger finger loop, a slotted portion carried by the thumb loop, the slot of said slotted ortion being arcuate' and disposed concentric with the pivot point of the thumb loop, and a clamping screw engaged through the slot and in the finger for operation to hold the thumb loop against pivotal movement.
2. A pair of shears comprising upper and lower blades, said blades having crossed portions pivotally connected for movement of the blades toward and away from each other, the upper blade having a relatively long handle provided with a finger loop, the lower blade havin' a relatively short upwardly and rearwarfily directed finger, a ivot pin engaged in the outer end portion of the said finger, a thumb loop ivoted upon the pivot pin, a sector carried 8* the thumb loop and extending over the inner face of the finger in the direction of the pivot point of the two blades, said sector having an arcuate slot therein concentric with the pivot point of the thumb loo said sector lying in the plane of the upper b ads, and a clamping screw engaged with its stem through the slot and with its end in the finger for operation to clamp the sector against the finger to hold the thumb loop against pivotal movement.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature,
1 in presence of two witnesses.
