To all zul/2,0117, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Fnnnnnien H. ARNOLD, citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvement in Safety-Razors,
of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to 'safety-razors oi the class in which the blade lies on the saine plane with the handle. l
The object of the present invention is to provide a razor the blade. of which may be set at any angle to the line of the handle and in which the entire blade and guard may be drawn into atubular handle When not in use.
- The invention consists of a tubular handle in which a sliding rod is mounted and an adjustable guard secured to the outer end thereof. The Whole is operated by a spring and is capable of being securely held. in either open or closed position.
The invention is morev fully described in the follovfin y specifications and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a sec- Fig. 3 is a detail view of the adjusting device. Fig. 4 shows in detail the clamping device for securing the blade to the guard at its outer end. Figs. 5 and d are detail views of the guard and blade, respectively.
The numeral l designates the handle, 2 the Guard, and 3 the blade. The handle is in the `erin of a tube and has a coiled spring l located therein. v
rhc nuni 5 designates the guardcarrier in the forni of a rod adapted to travel in the guide located inside the handle. The outer end 7 of the rod is bent at right angles and 'is provided with an adjusting looking device by means of which the guard is held in the desired position thereon. This locking device consists of an internally-screwthreaded sleeve 8, having a shoulder 9, which engages a collar 10 on the end of the rod 5. The rod 5 is formed With a plurality ot notches ll in its upper'face, vand the handle has a button l2, backed by a spring 13, secured to the inside of the handle, and this spring is formed Witha projection leon its free end. adapted to engage one of said notches. The coiled spring 4 is secured to said rod and forces it vthe handle, and When it is des out of the handle when the rod is/releaset` irorh its hold by the projection ifi.
The guard "formed with the usual and it has a central screw-thv i tion i5, onto which the leoni' screws.` The guard is also formed c hinge member l@ one end.
The blade is ci thin sheet metal ting edges, and is forrne Withahinffe at oneend adapted to rogister with .e inge inornber on the guard, to which it maybe secured bly the usual pin. The outer end of the blade has a snap-hool 1S formed thereon. This hook is intended to engage the outer end of the guard when the blade is closed against i The entire guard. and blade e housed in d to use .e razor the button l2 is raised, releasing the rod 5, and the coiled' sp* will force the entire guard, blade, and projection le engage movement. Tlhe guard may then he set at any anglo, as shown in iiig. i, by loosening the locking-sleeve 8 and the guard to the' desired position, when it is again tightened..
Having thus fully described niy invention, what l clairn, and desire te secure hyLett-ers Patent, isw
ln a safety-razor a guard, abladehinged thereto at one end and provided with a sn aphook at its opposite end, a carrying-rod, means for adjustably securing said guard. to said Vrod in combination with a hollov.T han` dle, a spring located therein adapted to engage said rod in open or closed position a coiled spring adapted to operate said rod.
2. lin a safety-razor, a hollow handle, aY springbaoked rod located therein, ineens for engaging said rod in. open or closedposition, a guard secured to the end oi said rod, moans for setting said guard at any angie te saidrod, and a blaue hinged to said guard at one end and provided with 'means for securing to said ,qu ard at the other end, the entire device capable of being housed in the handle.
