SAFETY PCKET-REZOR.
specification cf Letters Patent.
Application Med April 27, 1916. Serial No. 93,880.
To all' whom it may concern.'
A Be it .known that I', WiLLiAM CRANE, a citizen of the United Stat residing at Philadelphia, in the county of hiladelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Pocket-Razors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates tosafety razors and has for its object primarily to provide such a razor with a handle into which itmay be folded, with no part exposed, so that it may be safely and conveniently carried in a coat vor pants pocket in the saine manner as is the ordinary pocket knife, and further to provide for the adjustment ofthe angle of the razor with relation to the handle while keeping the same, in extended position, in the saine vertical plane with the handle, and further, to provide twozpivotal movements, the axis of one being at right angles to the axis of the other so that strain on one pivotal point will not affect the frictional grip of the other and so that in shaving there will be only one pivotal point ab t which the blade may turn, such possible movement be?.
ing in the same vertical plane with -the handle.`
In the accompanying drawings. Figure .1 represents a side elevation of a device embodying my invention, the/razor being extended and the cover "plate being closed, indicating in dotted lines thetwo extreme angular positions of the blade or razor proper. Fig. 2 represents a bottom view, the cover plate being raised to receive the razor blade and the latter bei@ folded nearly into the hollow handle; -Fi-j 3 represents a perspective View of the d "vicewlien in folded position; Fig. 4 reprgsents 'a sectional/view on line 4-4 of Fig. l; 5 repesents in rxdetail perspective the .batik-plate', thin blade and guardlplateof tle razor proper in s uperposed .frelatin Referring now in detail to the drawings, the razor proper or cutter or blade is composed of three elements, the guard-plate A, the blade B and back-plate C, all constructed in usual manner, being of the thin flexible blade type, and held together and adjusted in relation to each other by means of nut D, as usual in this type. To hold the nut D in position when being applied to the threaded stem of back-plate C and to prevent its loss when removed therefrom, I have provided a forked spring tongue E which is riveted a whole.
to theguardplate A and receives and holds frictionall', in its forked end the nut D, preventing f ie accidental disengagement of said forked tongue and nut, thelatter being annular/ly grooved at this point to aid in this action.
The inner end of the guard-plate A is rounded to fit in a corresponding recess of a plate l, both of said plates being'provided with registering perforations through which is passed an adjusting screw 2 engaging with the threads of the perforation in plate A, this perforation being internally screwthreaded for this purpose. A spring-washer 3 is interposed between the head o said screw 2 and the face of plate 1 in ord r'that Patented July 25,1916.
guard-plate A and the b lade B and plate C l carried thereby may be'lield yieldingly in any'angular. positionof adjustment in the same vertical plane with .said plate l and the handle 4. The inner end of this plate 1 is sleeved-on a pivot rod 3 which passes through the hollowhandle 4 near the 'open end of said handle, the axis of said rod 3 being at right angles -to the axis of screw 2.
The hollow handle 4, above mentioned, has one side and one end open so that the cutter,
razor or blade may he' extended therethrough. Hinged to'one side or edge ofthe side opening is the cover plate 5 to cover said opening and it is provided with a'n inwardly presented lug (i which will partially vclose the open end when the device is in folded position and which will engage and firmly hold the plate 1 against movement with rela- .tion to the handle 4 when the cutter is out in extended position. lli/hon closed the cover plate 5 will'be fiush with the edges of said side opening aridwill be held in such position by the resiliency of the handle 4 as For .convenience in open i ng 4it may be provided with a linger piece 7 as shown.
The operation is Obvious.v Also, it is ob- 4 vious that a safetyvrazor, such as shown and preferred by applicant, or any other form of razor or othereut'ter may be used in combination with the hollow receiving han/dle.
Ilaving thus described my'invention, what I claim to be new and desire to secure by' Letters Patent is'z- 1. A hollow handle having an open side and a coverfplate hinged to said handle to cover said side opening, in combination withl a plate pivotally mounted in said handle to turn laterally in and out of said open side and a razor mounted on said plate, said plate and razor` lying Wholly within the handle when in their folded position and the cover plate being held flush with the edges of said side opening by the resiliency .of the handle as a Whole.
2. hollow handle having an open side and an open/end, and a cover Vplate hinged to said handle to cover said side opening and having a depending lug to partially` close saidend opening; 1n combination with aplate pivotally mounted in said handleto turn laterally inland out of said open side and end, and a safety razor mountedon said plate to turn in the plane in which the axis y Y of the pivot of said plate lies, said plate and cutter lying wholly within the handle when in their folded position and the cover plate being held flush with -the edges of Said side opening by the resiliency of the handle as a whole.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
