SAFETY-RAZOR.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee. 31, 19118.
Application led April 25, 1918. Serial No. 230,762.
To a'll'whom t may concern:
` Be it known that. I, JAMES D. GoonwiN, a citi-zen of the United States. residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of. Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates tosafety razors, the claims herein being limited to a partl of the invention as illustrated and described in the application of Landon H. Stephenson and James D. Goodwin Serial Number 4245 filed Jan. 25. 1915. The object of the invention is to provide novel and improved means for the relative adjustment and fastening of the blade and handle at different angles to better adapt the article to the requirements and desire of the individual users.
With a view to attaining the foregoing object as will be understood from the description hereinafter following, taken in Connection with .accompanying drawing-s illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention incertain novel features of construetion, combination and arrangement of parts, is disclosed as follows:

Referring specifically to drawings wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, and first to the device shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, a razor blade holder is shown which comprises a guard plate 1 whichl is pivoted at 2 to a fastening plate or clamping plate 3., The razor blade 4 is secured in position by the clamping plate 3..
At each end of the blade 4 a notch 4 is prolvided ine which extends a lug 1 integral with an rising from the guard plate. As means to secure the clamping plate 3 in blade-fastening position, I employ a slidable locking plate 5 which has elongated slots 6 through which pass pins 7 secured to the plate. This slidable member 5 has an upwardly and inwardly extending fastening lug 8 which enters a groove 9 formed in the top of the fastening plate It will be realized that by this construction. the plate 3 is fastened by the slidable fastening element When the blade is to be removed, the ele ment 5 is moved outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 2. the sliding movement being permitted by the elongated slots 6. After the lug 8 through sliding movement disengages theI plate 3. said plate can then be freely'swung upwardly from the pivot 2 and the blade inspected or removed if desired, as suggested in Figs. 2' and 3.
A suitable fastening head 10 preferably having a spherical surface as shown, is secured to the holder by 'means of a stud 11 integral with the head 10 and fastened in an opening providedin the guard plate 1. Upon the'stud 11 as `an axis is mounted a swivel plate 12 which has ears 13to which' the handle is pivoted for movement in planes diametric with the axis of stub 11. While thehandle may be of any approved form, I prefer to construct it so that it will have separate arms 14 which are hinged on pins in the nature of set screws 14', which Set erlesene screws pass through the arms and detach' the bearingr blocks and a suitable shaped end strip 18. Block 15 has an opening `19 as seen -in Figs. 3 and 4, which is provided with screw threads to engage the screw threads of a fastening rod 2O and 21. 20`has an enlarged portion 22 which is turnably and slidably mounted in an opening 23, of block 16. Beyond the block 16 is provided a head 20 preferably knurledon its periphery as shown, the inne'r end of the rod 20 is preferably reduced or tapered at 24 so as to better engage recesses 25 extending inwardly from the peripheryof'the head 10 and arranged in any approved manner for instance in a peripheral row and one snb- .pac

While rod is in a retracted position with the end 24 disengaged from the notches 25, it will be realized that the/handle can freely turn from the stud llas an'axis and that in paths radially of the. stud 1l. ln this way the handle can be adjusted to practically any desired angle, so as to adapt the safety razor to the needs and desires of the individual users. The handle may be fastened in any ofthe adjusted positions upon screwing the rod 20y by engagement of the fingers of/the operator-.with the head 20 vso that the end 24 will frictionally engage or bite into the head '10. However, it is preferred to provide the. recesses 25 at the proper location so that it will not be necessary to depend upon friction alone to maintain the parts in adjusted position. ln order to properly adjust the handle, head 20 is'k turned in .a direction vopposite to that mentioned, so as` to retract the rod 20 so that the end 24 will disengage the notches 25.
A modifiedxform of the invention is illustrated in Figs. 5' to 9 inclusive. The blade holder inthis instance comprises a guardv plate having eyelets 31. A removable blade 32 is fastened against the plate 30 by meas of a fastening plate 33 which has a hook 34 extending toward the handle and provided with an 'inwardly extending lug or lip 35. 'A latch 36 is employed to engage the `clamping plate 33 intermediate the lug 35 and the guard plate 30 to facilitate its adjustment. The blade 32 is mounted against sliding 'movement relatively to the guard plate by means in the nature ot lugs 37 in! tegral withthe 4plate which projects into an elongated slot 38 of the blade. Adjacent the hinge end, guard plate 30 is provided with a recess 45 in its upper surface to receive one of the clasp arms 44 in order that the blade 32 may lie dat on the upper face of plate 30j Thearms 44 are located in the path of movement of the end 46 of the hinge leaf 39. Secured in an opening of the plate 30 isa stud 47 which has a fastening head 48 thereon provided with a spherical surface. The latch 3G is mounted on the stud 47 to swing in a plane parallel to that ot the head 30.
It will be noted that the latch 36 by its engagement between lip 35 and the plate 30 securely fastens the clamping plate 33 over the blade 32 and that the lugs 37 extend into the recess or lelongatedslot 38 securelyfastening the blade to the guard 30. Further it 35, whereupon the lip 35 may be moved away" from the guard 30. During `the movement of the clamp. plate 33 end 36 of hinge leaf 39 engages against one 'of the clasp arms 44, thereby causing the clasp 43--44 to move with the clamp plate 33 and causing the blade 32 'to separate or move away from the` guard '30. It will be realized that inasmuch as the blade 32 is then separated from the guard 30,
that it can -be more easily removedfrom the holder than would be true if it rested at all times upon the uppe1.3face of the ard 30. It is to be noted that the clampin plate 33 has a limited movement before the end 46 ist.

These arms 54 are preferably formed integral with a bearihg body 55 suitably shaped to form the handle proper which may have at its outer end a suitable shaped strip integral therewith.- A fastening rod 59 is employed which is provided with screw threads at 60 to mesh with screw threads provided in an opening 61 of body 55. On the rod` 59 is provided a clutch member 62 to directly en gage the head 48 at the end opposite to clutch head 62. The rod 59 is provided with a manipulating -head 63 preferably knurled on its exterior. i i

in addition is freely turnable in planes radially of the stud 47 as an axis on the ivots 53. When the handle is swung the ro 59 is of course out of clutch relation with the head 48. After proper adjustment has been secured, the rod is screwed inwardly so that fasten the parts in relative adjusted relation. y
It is to ybe understood that inasmuch as I have shown only the preferred embodiment of my invention, changes in detail of construction, arrangement and combination of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. f
