UNITE STATE@ PAIN GEORGE J. CARLISLE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 CARVER W.- BARBER,' OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, AND ONE-HALF TO UTILITY DEVELOPMENT c SALES COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
Application led February 21, 1916.
To all whom 25 may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. CARLISLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain useful Improvements in Safety-Razors and Hair-Cutters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in safety razors and hair cutters, one object of the invention being the provision of a holder for a blade, such holder being so constructed as to permit the blade to be positioned and locked for use, so that the blade will be extended beyond the guards for a razor, within the guards as a hair cutter, or for stropping and honing.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a blade holder, which is simple, durable and inexpensive in construction, and thoroughly eiiieient and practical in use. p
With the foregoing and other objects in view and which will appear as the descrip` tion proceeds, the invention resides in the novel features and arrangement of parts hereafter set forth, the scope of the invention being limited only by what is claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of the complete device.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the two members swung apart.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the locking member.
Fig. d is a longitudinal section on line 4.-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective View of a slight modilication, showing in detail the plate 14.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view through the modification.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the plate 14 detached.
Referring to the drawings, the numerals 5 and 6 designate the two members of the device, each of which is made of sheet metal, preferably steel of 20 gage, the eyelet 7, being fitted in the openings 8 and 9 of such members and connecting the member for Swinging movement,
Each member is provided with the guard Specification of Letters Patent.

teeth 10, while the member 5 is provided with the triangle shaped opening 11, having the slit or notch 12 leading' from one angle thereof. Carried by the other member is a triangular lip or lug 13, which is integral therewith struck up from the body of the member 6. In Figs. 5, 6 and 7 there is shown a slight modification wherein the body of the member 6 supports the keeper which is in the form of a U-shape member 14 forming two embracing portions 15 and 1G respectively and this member is trained through a slot 17 in the body 6, the portion 15 being cut to provide the lug 13 which projects outwardly therefrom. The portion 15 is formed with a recess 18 while the portion 1G is formed with a locking prong or tang 19 which is passed through the body 6 from the out-er to the inner face thereof and is bent about the portion 15 at and to lie within the recess 13 therein so that in this manner the U-shape member 14 is secured to thc body 6 with the portion 16 lying against the outer face of the body G and the portion 15 lying against the inner face thereof. The shoulder 2O of the lug 13 forms a limiting means for the razor blade 21, which may be of the single or double edge safety razor type in g'eneral use, the same assuming the position as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and f1 when in use, or being applied.
In inserting a blade in the present holder, the members are separated as shown in Fig. 2, and the blade is placed upon the member 6 with one end next to the pivot 7, the other end being seated against the shoulder 20 of the lug 13. The member 5 is then swung and slightly lifted to permit the lug 13 to fit within the opening 11, so that the free edge will project beyond the outer face of the member 5, at which time the member 5 is swung in a direction to place the portion of the lug adjacent the shoulder 20 in the slit 12, with the lug exteriorly of the member o. Thus the parts are locked and held together. The normal resiliency of the members 5 and 6, will tend to hold them flush together, so that there will be no tendency of the members to separate, and thus it will require pressure to unseat the lug when the member 5 is moved to the left.
The back of each plate or member 5 or 6 it out away as et 22, so when it is desirable to hone or strop the blade, the cutting edge of the blade is projected toward the back of the holder and projects at such cut-away portions and is permitted free access to the hone or strop.
It is evident that With a device of this character a razor blade may be clamped for use as a hair cutter or razor, and also for honing and stropping, and that by a simple manipulation of the members, they may be freed or locked.
1What I claim, as new, is
l. A device of the character described comprising a pair of companion members pivotally connected for swinging movement relative to each other and having handle portions, one of said members being formed with a V-shaped opening at a point remote from the pivotal connection thereof with the other member and also provided With a slot extending laterally from one Wall of the opening and communicating With said opening and a lug carried by the other member for registration With the opening and having a hook forming a keeper for insertion Within said opening to lock Within the slot on the movement of the handle portions of the members into lateral alinement with each other.
2. A device of the character described comprising a pair of companion members pivotally connected for swinging movement relative to each other and having handle portions, one of said members being formed with a V-shaped opening at a point remote from the pivotal connection thereotl With the other member and also provided With a slot extending laterally from one ivall of the opening and communicating with said opening, a lug carried by the other member for registration with the opening and having a hook forming a keeper :for insertion within said opening to lock within the slot on the movement of the handie portions olil the members into lateral alinenient with each other, and guard teeth out into edges adjacent each other et the members `for er;- posing a cutting blade when clamped between said members.
In testimony ivhereoi': I ailix my signature,
GEORGE J. CARLSLE,
