Description

H. 'P. MQMILLAN;
RAZOR. 'APPLIGAITIONI'ILED 1 33.17, 1912.
Patented Apr. 8, 1913.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUGH P. MQMILLAN, or BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
mzon.
Specificationof Letters Patent.
' Patented Apr. 8, 1913.
Application filed February 17, 1912. Serial No. 678,277.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, HUGH P. MGMILLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing" at Baltimore, in .the State of Maryland, have .invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n razors and has particular reference to :i'
T'Vith these and other objects in view the accompanying drawing illustrates the invention. wherein, y y
Figure 1, shows the improved razor inside elevation as viewed from one side. Fig. 2, is a similar view of the razor but viewed from the other side. Fig. 3, is a side elevation of the detached blade-carrying bar.- Fig. 4, a side view of the blade. Fig. 5, a side view of the detached comb. F ig, ('3, a cross-section'on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1 showing the blade-carrying bar, the guard bar and the sliding clip plate. Fig. 7, 1s a cross-se ctional-view taken on the line 77 of Fig. 1, through the bladecarrying bar; blade and guard, and Fig. 8, 1s a longitudinal side 'or edge view of the blade-carrying 'bar detached from the handle.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, 1, designates the handle of the razor having the usual construction of razor handles of this character so that the blade-carrying bar, 2, may be pivotally mounted at one end thereof by means of a pintle,-3.
' The blade-carrying bar is preferably a stamped-up bar and has a central longitudinal channel or grooves, therein, which in the present" instance, extends from end-to.- end. At the outer end this bar is provided With a centralback-t-urned hook, flange or equivalent device, 5, which turns back at one side of'but off-set fromthe channel or the bar, 2.
groove, and the parallel sides of the bar at the opposite end are provided with flanges, 6, which beside strengthening the bar give breadth to said edges and afford a better hold for the fingers during the operation of shaving. By, referring to Fig. 8, it will be noted that the flanges, 6, do not extend the entire length of the bar but only for a portion of the length,thus the outer end of the bar is free of side flanges. The bar,'2-. is also provided in its longitudinalchannel or groove with positioning devices, 7, which in the present instance have the form of projections, the purpose of which will presently be described. -A perforation, 8, in the bar serves for the free passage of the pintle, 3, by means of which the bar is pivotally connected to the handle.
The blade, 9, has two longitudinal cutting edges, 10, and on one side has a central longitudinal groove or channel, 11, while on the opposite side it is provided with a cen- "tral longitudinal projection or rib, 12,-.-
The guard plate, 13, has a plurality of teeth, 14, along its opposite edges and a plurality of intervening spaces, 15,-between the teeth, as clearly seen in Fig. 5. This plate also has a central longitudinal depression, 16, along one side and a corresponding rib. 17, along the opposite side. A plurality of positioning devices, 18, are provided on the guard plate and said-devices are of a shape to ooact with the positioning devices, '7, on
As the latter devices are circular projections the devices, 18, on the guard plate are circular recesses so as to receive said projections. Obviously the shape of the projections and recesses are immaterial and it is also obvious that the projections and recesses may be reversed,' that is, the bar, 2, may have the recesses and the guard plate the projections.
The guard plate has a reduced or narrow inner end, 19, preferably of substantially the same width as the bar, 2, and the groove or channel, 16, extends throughout .thelength at the opposite side of In assemblin the parts to put the razor into condition For use',the bar, 2, is swuh" outwardly. from the handle and the blade, 9, is laid against the bar with the longitudinal projection or rib, 12, of the'blade seated in thelongitudinal groove or channel',' 4,' of the bar,/as shown in 'Fig. 7 In seating-the blade against the said'bar, '2, the sameis pushed outwardly until one end of the. blade preve t rearwardlongitudinal movement of the'guard-plate on the bar. It; will thus be seen that theguard pldte and bar serve as clamps between which the blade is placed and when held together,--the clip plate, 20, maybe moved alongthe flanges, 6, of the bar until it passes onto; the inner reduced, end, 19, of the guardwhereupon it will hold the positioning devices, 7, and,.-l8, in engage-. ment and thus securely clamp-the blade so that-both cutting edges, 10, thereo will be' in operative relation wit'hrespec j to the .teeth', 14, and intervening'spaces, 15, of the guard-plate.v
From the foregoing itwill be seen that "the operation jof'assemblin the parts is Sim-- ple and tl at no threaded tastenings'are employed oi-necessary to secure the parts to- 'gether, and also that the parts mayreadily be'separated for cleaning. Itl'will also be .seen that the longitudinalgrooves and ribsonthe several parts serve to accurately adjust the cutting edges of the bladewi'threspect to the guard and prevent lateral displacement of parts. i
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is, I
1. In arazor the combination with a handle, of a blade-carrying'bar pivotally connected to the handle and having a longitudinal groove which latter is provided with positioning devices; a blade having a" groove at one side and a rib at the opposite side aihich latter enters the groove in the bar, the b ade having position againstthe carrying bar between the 'free end of the latter and the positioning devices inlthe groove of the guard plate. a
Having thus described my invention what" carrying bar whereby to leave the said positioning devices exposed a guard plate hav-' ing a rib' to enter the groove of the blade and said plate also having a red iced end to project beyond the inner end of the blade and the said reduced end of the guard plate having positioning devices to engage the positioning devices on [the carrying bar and a clip plate to clamp the reduced end of the gainst the bar and hold the blade in place. v
2. 'In a razor the combination with thandle, of a blade-carryin bar pivot ally connected to the handle an having a longitudinal groove with positioning devices located inthe groove and also having a'hook turned.
back over at its free end which hook overlies but is spaced fromthe longitudinal groove;
ablade having a groove at one side anda I'll) at the opposite side which latter enters the- .groove on the har -one end .of the blade project'ng beneath the 'said back turned "book a d the other end terminating at a point between the hook and the positioning devices in the groove of said carrying bar whereby to leave said devices uncovered; a
guard plate having a rib to enter the groove of the blade landone-end of the guard plate also vpro'ecting beneath! the back turned hook on t e carrying bar while the other end of said guard plate has alreduced portion to. a be engaged by the positioning devices on the carrying barand means to clamp thereduced portion of the guard plate and the bar together;
8'. In arazor thecomo natlon with a handle, of a blade carryingbar pivotally connectedto the handle near one end and having a longitudinal groove. at one side and longitudinalside flanges along a portion only of its length; a blade having a longitudinal groove at one side and a longitudinal rib at the otherside which rib seats inthe groove of the carrying bar; a guard, plate having a rib at one side to engage the groove o1 the.blade and said guard plate being provided with a reduced end to seat against th blade carrying bar and a clip plate having its opposite sides engaging the side flanges on the carrying bar and clipping thereduced end of the uard plate against the bu. whereby to hold t e bla e'in place.
In'testimon whereof I'aflix my signature in nresence'o two witnesses.
HUGH P. MoMILLAN.
