C. R. BENNETT RAZOR Filed July 24, 1946 IN VEN TOR.

jectionable when one wanted to travel with little K or no other luggage than shaving equipment. When traveling. it is important that the shaving equipment be compact when stored, particularly if one is traveling lightly. Also, in many instances, one might desire to carry his shaving equipment with him and shave at a later time atwhatever place he w-as when time and opportunity for shaving presented themselves.
The general object of this invention is to avoid and overcome the foregoing and other disadvantages of known types of razors and to provide a razor which is characterized by its compaotness when not in use and by its ease of transportation.
Anotherobject of the invention is to provide a novel razor of attractive appearance.
Another object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive sturdy razor which can be stored in a small space. l
A further object of the invention is to provide a razor unit that can be retracted into its positioning-handle when not in use.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a razor that is easily changed from an operative position to a collapsed, storage position.
The foregoing, and other objects of the invention, which will be made apparent as the specification proceeds, are achieved by the provision of a razor comprising a pair of blade holding means, a pair of spring arms adapted to mount the blade holding means but adapted to permit such means to be placed ush with at least one of the arms, a tubular container, and means slidably mounting one end of each of the arms in the container for retraction of the arms and blade holding means into the container and for extension of the arms from the container for operatively positioning the blade holding means.
Reference now is made to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a razor embodyingT the principles of my invention with the razor in non-operative position and with part of the mounting handle removed;
Fig. V2 is an elevation of the razor of Fig. l in its extended position;
Fig. 3 is an elevation .of the razor when in operative position;
4 is a top plan of the razor blade securing unit; and
Fig. .5 is a vertical section on line 5-5 of Figa.
.With regal-cto the dei-.aus of them .mme digI closed in the drawings, there is shown a tubular handle I which is provided with a tubular top 2 that is suitably removably engaged with the handle I, as by a single thread 3. The handle I has an axially directed slot 4 formed therein which slot has a lpin 5 with a head 6 thereon extending through it to engage with a block '1,Which is snugly received in the handle for axial sliding movement therein. A prime feature of the invention is that a razor unit is associated with the block l and dapted to be extended from the handle I into its operative position or be retracted into the handle into non-operative position dependent upon the'position of.` the block lin the handle. The head 6 and pin 5 are used to slide the block and associated means in and out of the handle I.
In order to position a razor unit on the handle I, a U-shaped member of suitable composition, usually metal, and having two spring arms v8 and 9, is secured to the block l, preferably by a screw la, extending into the inner end of the block 1, since the U-shaped member extends around the block with arms 8 and 9 lying against a pair of opposed attened sides of the block.
The razor blade I0 of the razor of my invention, is positioned by suitable means which may comprise a small, nat, rectangular member II which has a hinge eye l2 formed thereon with a. lip I3 extending therefrom, and a second small, fiat rectangular member I4 which has a pair of hinge eyes `I5 formed thereon. A hinge pintle IS extends through vthe hinge eyes I2 and I5 with lthe eye I 2 being snugly received between the eyes I5 to secure the members II and I4 together for relative pivotal movement therebetween. A V- shaped spring I'I is positioned between the lip I 3v on the member II and the member I4 as shown in Fig. 4 to urge the members into blade engaging relation. The blade I0 may be positioned with its inner longitudinal edge against the forward edges of the hinge eyesr I2 and I5.
To secure the razor blade unit to the arms 8 and Q, the member I4 also has an axially extendv ing mounting bracket I8 usually formed integrally therewith and extending substantially perpendicularly therefrom. The bracket I8 has a pin I9 extending through it at each end and one of the pins IS is adapted to be pivotallyA engaged with, or hinged yon bifurcated ends 2l)r of the arm 8 while the other pin I9 is adapted to be temporarily engaged with bifurcated ends 2I of the arm 9. Thus the member I4 and the means carried thereby are adapted to be secured between the ends of the arms 8 and 9 in operative position, or to be disengaged from the arm 9 at which time the member I4 can be swung down.
to Isuperimposed relation with the arm B.' In fact, the member I4 will usually swing to-,such
superposed position normally by gravity action..
3 The arm 8 may be provided with a flat or straight section 8a in the bifurcated ends thereof to aid in moving the blade engaging unit from inoperative position to operative position as such section 8a will function as a stop for pivotal movement of the blade unit.
Fig. l shows that a cap 22, usually made of.
metal, may be secured in the end of the handle I, which handle preferably is made of a section of tubular plastic material of suitable physical properties and attractive appearance.
The top 2 likewise may be secured to the handle I by any desired means and the top is formed of any desired material which might be a plastic or else could be a suitable metal, such as aluminum,'o'r chrome-plated steel. The top 2 is shown with an integral end section and it is adapted to be'placed on the handle I'when the razor blade is rwithdrawn into the handle, or when the arm 9 is disengaged from the member I4. Of course, both the handle I and top 2-could be made with separate or integral closed end portions, as desired.
The top 2 preferably is made of such length as to receive therein a tube 23 which usually carries shaving crea-m so that the shaving unit of the invention would provide a compact, attractive article that can easily be carried on ones person but still be completely self-sufcient for shaving operations.
To facilitate carrying the shaving unit in nonoperative position, a clip (not shown) of the kind carried by fountain pens could be positioned on the handle I or top 2, if desired.
In some instances, one might not require space for carrying shaving cream with the novel shave unit of the invention and in such event, no top, or an abbreviated end cover might be provided for the handle I. Or, the cover could be so formed as to carry a reserve supply of razor blades in it.
' It will be seen that the razor blade positioning members I I and I4 can be formed of any suitable material, such as brass, and that the spring I I is provided to urge the members into blade engaging relationship. The blade Ill can easily be removed by slight pressure on the lip I3 which will compress the spring and pivot the member II to the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 5.-
If desired, small protuberances could be formed on members I I or I 4 to mate with complementary recesses, or holes in the blade to lock it in position with relation to such members.
From the foregoing, it will be observed that a very attractive razor device is provided, which razor can easily be moved from operative to nonoperative positions and that, when in inoperative position, is very compact.` It also is so designed as to form an easily carried article, that is selfsuicient for shaving purposes.
It also should be noted that in some instances, it might be desired to make the razor of the invention Without the retractability feature so that the blade holding members would be moved to a position superposed on the arm 8 and the top placed over the inoperative razor unit to facilitate its transportation.
While one presently preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described herein in detail, it will be realized that the scope of the invention is not limited thereto or thereby, but is dened by the appended claims.
