UNITED TATES PATENT FFIQE.
JAMES .L. MURPHY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COLLAR-BAND PROTECTOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES L. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Collar-Band Protectors, of which the following is a com plete specification.
The main objects of this invention are to provide a device adapted to prevent the collar band of a shirt from chafing or injuring the neck when the band has become rough from wear or other causes; to provide a collar band protector which is adapted to be inserted over the band and keep it out of contact with the neck; and to provide a very cheap, simple, and durable device adapted to be detachably secured to the collar band to permit it to be removed and cleaned when desired.
A specific construction embodying said invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a collar band protector embodied in this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same looking toward the rear. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of the front side of the protector, showing the front collar button permanently secured thereto.
In the construction shown, the protector is constructed of celluloid and comprises an inner strip or member 1 which is adapted to be placed on the inner side of the collar band 2, and an outer strip 3 which is formed integrally with the top of the inner strip and extends downwardly on the outer side of the band, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2.
At the back of the protector is a buttonhole flap 4, which extends downwardly from the outer strip 3 and affords means for attaching the protector to the rear collar button. The ends of the protector meet in front and are provided on the inner strip 1 with flaps 5 and 6 for the front collar button 7. Said button, as shown in Fig. 3, is permanently secured to the flap 6 by having its large end molded or cast into the flap Specification of Letters Patent.

when the flap is formed. This construction not only prevents the front collar button from becoming lost but also protects the neck of the wearer from becoming injured by the button.
The device can be easily placed on the neck of the shirt by inserting the inner strip 1 on the inner side of the band with the outer strip 3 overlapping the outer side of the band. The rear flap 4 is then secured to the rear collar button and the front button 7 is inserted through the button hole in the flap 5 and through the front button holes of the collar band.
While I have shown and described but one specific embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that many details of the construction shown may be varied or omitted without departing from the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. A collar band protector, comprising an outer and inner strip integrally secured together, button flaps on the ends of the inner strips, and a collar button permanently secured in one of said flaps.
2. A collar band protector, comprising innor and outer strips integrally secured together at their upper edges, a button hole flap on the outer strip atthe rear of the protector, button flaps on the ends of the inner strip, and a button molded in one of said flaps.
3. A collar band protector, comprising a member U shaped in cross section and adapted to overlap the outer and inner sides of a collar band, means on the rear of the protector adapted to secure it to the band, button flaps on the front of the protector, and a collar button having its inner end permanently embedded in one of said flaps.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
