JAMES R. WILLIAMS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SAFETY-POCKET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs R. WILLIAMS, citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Pockets, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the"construction of pockets, the object being to pro vide a novel means for preventing the accidental loss of articles carried therein.
To this end the invention comprises essentially a pocket having an elastic band applied to the neck portion thereof in such a manner as to normally close the same, means being provided to prevent the body portion of the pocket from contracting and forming a wad which would cause the garment to ulge in an objectionable manner.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which: igure 1 is a perspective view showing the Invention applied. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the pocket, the ends of the elastic band being shown as loose. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the pocket.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings the numeral 1 designates a garment of any suitable type, and 2 a pocket applied thereto, the mouth of the pocket being stitched to the edges of the hand receiving opening in the garment in the usual manner. Surrounding the neck portion of the pocket or the portion thereof adjacent the mouth is an elastic band 3 which may be formed of any approved material and which operates to normally contract the neck por tion of the pocket in such a manner as to closethe same and prevent the accidental Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed March 13, 1907. Serial No. 362,195.

loss of any articles which might be carried in the pocket. It will be readily apparent however that when pressure is applied to the band the same will readily expand to admit of the hand being inserted into the pocket in the usual manner.
Under some conditions it'may be found desirable to place the elastic band 3 under a loop such as that designated at 4, the said loop serving as a housing to protect the band 3 and retain the same in position. Should the band 3 at any time be broken it will be readily apparent that a new band can be quickly inserted under the loop 4;. In order to prevent the lower or body portion of the pocket 2 from being drawn together in such a manner as to cause the garment to bulge, a stiffening strip is applied thereto as indicated at 5. In the present instance this stiffening strip 5 extends along the bottom and side edges of the lower portion of the pocket and tends to hold the latter in a dis tended position. Owing to this feature the invention is enabled to be employed in connection with any of the usual types of garments provided with pockets and the mouth of the pocket is normally held in a closed po sition so as to prevent accidental loss of any articles within the pocket, while at the same time the body portion of the pocket is held in a distended position and is prevented from being drawn together to form an objectionable wad.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
The herein described safety pocket comprising a body portion, an elastic band inclosing the neck of the body portion and operating to normally contract the said neck, and a stiffening strip applied to the bottom and side edges of the lower portion of the pocket and serving to ,maintain the same in a distended position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature -in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES R. WILLIAMS.
