UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB F. MILES, OF PHILADELPHIA,PENNSYLVANIA.
SAFETY WATCH-POCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 264,321, dated September 12, 1882.
Application filed June 5, 1882.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB F. MILES, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful 1mproveinent in Safety VVatch-Pockets, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the safety watch-pocket embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a safety watchpocket, the construction, operation, and ad vantages whereof will be hereinafter fully 'described.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the pocket of a garment, the same being adapted to receive a watch, locket, &c., and is constructed as usual in such cases.
B represents a guard of the form of a hook, made of wire or other suitable metal or material, the shank a of the hook being bent, as at b, toward the point 0, so as to leave the throat (I, the end portion, a, of the shank extending in a line coinciding with the outer limb, a, of the book of the guard, said line thus projecting across the throat, as seen in Fig. 3. The guard is secured to the inner face of the front portion of the pocket by sewing, riveting, or otherwise connecting the portion a with said face, so that the throat d is adjacent to said face, or the walls of the throat and said face (No model.)
. are contiguous, and the throatis thereby closed by the fabric of the pocket.
The watch is inserted in the pocket, as usual, and the guard is thrown back so as to uncover the throat, wherebyeither the chain, the pendant, or ring of the watch, locket, 850., may be fitted in or engaged with the book of the guard. The pressure of the garment causes the pocket to close the throat, whereby the disengage ment of the watch or chain can only be accomplished by forcing the guard inward or backward and uncovering the throat. This will require the use of the fingers eitherin the pocket against the guard, or the manipulation of the watch, 850., or chain or the guard, or both, which operations can be readily performed by the carrier of the watch, but which, if undertaken by a pickpocket, would be detected or be unsuccessful.
The guard is preferably formed of doubled wire, so as to be light, strong, and inexpensive.
, Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a pocket, of a guard attached to the inside thereof, and consisting of a hook having its shank bent to form athroat, d, which is closed by contact with the fabric of the pocket, substantially as and for n the purpose set forth.
JACOB F. MILES.
