Description

(No Mod'elg v T. HODGE.
BUTTON HOOK. I j No. 358,118. Patented Feb. 22, 1887.
. l 'N EEEEE.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS B. HODGE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
BUTTON-HOOK.
QPECIPI CATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,118, dated February 22, 1887.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS B. HODGE, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Button-Hooks; and'I declare the followingto be a specification thereof, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings. 7
Like letters indicate like parts.
Figure l is a side'elevation of my invention, showing the button-hook open. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing it closed.
My invention consists of a button-hook made of spring-wire, and having bent ends which are capable of interlocking by being twisted upon each other, substantially as hereinafter described.
The hook Ais made of spring-wire, having its ends a a bent outwardly in divergent directions, as seen in Fig. 1. On each end of the wire is a ball or knob, B, from one of which a pendent charm or ornament, O, is hung by the chain D.
When in the. position shown inFig. 1, the hook is used for buttoning gloves, boots, 850., in the usual manner. When not required for use, the ends can be interlocked and closed, as shown in Fig. 2. This is done by passing the bent end a of the wire over the bent end a by a twisting movement, which results in the engagement of the ends by the resilience of the spring-wire of the hook. When thus locked, the button-hook can be more conveniently carried in the pocket or pocket-book or can be readily attached'to a glove, watch-chain, or button. By inserting one end of the hook through a button-hole and then interlocking the ends it is securely held and cannot be lost. If thus fastened in the button'hole or upon the button of a dress or garment, it presents the appearance of a fob-chain. on account of the pendent ornament or charm or, if inserted through the ring of a watch and then looked over a button of the garment, it protects the watch from theft or loss. In all these ways it can be worn as an article of personal adornment, and yet is instantly detachable and ready for immediate use as a buttoner.
I claim as a novel and useful invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The improved button-hook A herein described, made of spring-wire, and having each end bent outwardly at an angle to form interlocking shoulders, as shown, which ends normally spread apart in the same plane when free, but are capable of interlocking by the resilience of the wire when one end is twisted over the other, substantially as specified.
2. .The combination of the spring-wire button-hook A, having the bent ends a a and knobs B B and the pendent ornament G and chain D, substantially as shown.
THOMAS B. HODGE.
