Description
本發明關於一種有機發光二極體顯示器、一種含有有機發光二極體顯示器之資訊裝置、以及一種在有機發光二極體顯示器中顯示影像的方法。
有機發光二極體(OLED)顯示器不需要背光,因此體積可以薄化,且沒有視角的限制。因此OLED顯示器可望逐漸取代傳統的陰極射線管(CRT)顯示器以及液晶顯示器(LCD)。
使用OLED單元的問題之一在於影像顯示不均(Mura缺陷),通常乃由於有機發光單元的亮度不一致而產生。有機發光單元的亮度主要由製程決定,且會隨著使用時間而降低。有機發光單元的亮度降低的速度主要由有機發光單元之特性、製程條件、有機發光單元的驅動方式、以及其他條件所決定。
Mura缺陷在全彩的OLED顯示器中會更嚴重。因為不同顏色的OLED單元其亮度降低的速度也不同。不同色彩之OLED單元間亮度的差異會隨著時間更為顯著。
除了Mura缺陷外,OLED顯示器(特別是EL發光材料)會老化(aging)使其發光效率降低,進而縮短其使用壽命。OLED顯示器的老化乃是跟通過OLED發光單元之累積電流相關,進而導致表現效果降低,而OLED發光材料的老化也導致OLED發光單元的電阻增加,使得在一固定電壓下通過OLED發光單元的電流減少,並進一步降低在一固定電壓下OLED發光單元之亮度。除了OLED的電阻會隨著使用時間而改變之外,發光材料的發光效率也會跟著遞減。不同發光材料其發光效率遞減的速度也不同,造成差異性的顏色老化以及白點偏移。甚者,每個個別畫素老化的速度也不同,造成顯示影像的不均勻,或是稱為影像燒灼(image sticking or image burning)。
一般來說,Mura缺陷以及OLED老化的問題乃是分開個別處理,使得電路設計複雜,也造成製造成本的增加。因此,有必要提供一種新的有機發光二極體顯示器與一種在有機發光二極體顯示器中顯示影像的方法,其中對於Mura缺陷或是材料老化所造成的不均勻狀況能夠加以補償。
鑑於先前技術的缺失,本發明其中一方面提供一種有機發光二極體顯示器,包含顯示面板、記憶體與處理電路。顯示面板包含複數個次畫素。記憶體儲存一補償表。處理電路包含電流感測器與處理器。電流感測器感測複數個次畫素中至少一次畫素之電流,而補償表根據電流感測器所感測到之電流而加以更新。處理器接收影像資料而根據影像資料以及更新之補償表產生補償影像資料。接著顯示面板顯示補償影像資料。
配合以下之較佳實施例之敘述與圖式說明,本發明之目的、實施例、特徵、與優點將更為清楚。
本發明可應用在頂部發光OLED顯示裝置(從基板上方的封蓋發光)以及底部發光OLED顯示裝置(從基板下方發光)。甚者,本發明可應用在,但不限於,頂部發光與底部發光之OLED主動陣列裝置。
圖1顯示本發明一實施例中具有OLED顯示器10之資訊裝置1。在此實施例中,OLED顯示器10為一彩色影像顯示器並整合至資訊裝置1之中。熟此技藝者應知,資訊裝置1可包含,但不限於,例如手機、數位相機、個人數位助理、筆記型電腦、桌上型電腦、電視、全球定位系統、車用顯示器、航空用顯示器、數位相框或可攜式DVD放影機等等。
如圖1所示,OLED顯示器10包含顯示面板101、記憶體103、與處理電路110。顯示面板101包含複數個不同顏色(例如紅綠藍)之次畫素102,而每個次畫素102乃分別由處理電路110所控制,以呈現彩色影像(其細節將描述於後)。次畫素102的數目將隨著資訊裝置1的需求而定,且本發明並不欲加以限制。值得一提的是,次畫素102可由供發出不同色彩光之發光材料所構成,或是全由發出白光之發光材料所構成,每一個別次畫素再搭配濾光片以產生不同顏色之光。
記憶體103,可實施為快閃記憶體、SRAM或是DRAM,乃供儲存與維持一補償表105。起初,補償表105根據每個次畫素102的特性以及全部次畫素102之平均亮度而建立。為了決定每個次畫素102的特性,可將預定測試訊號提供給每個次畫素102,而測量每個次畫素之亮度或是電流,藉此可決定每個次畫素102的特性。舉例來說,每個次畫素之電特性可藉由與每個次畫素連結之薄膜電晶體(未圖示)所測量,或者每個次畫素之光學特性可藉由提供給每個次畫素102之光感測器(未圖示)所測量。由於製程變動與其他熟此技藝者可知之變數,每個次畫素102可能沒有均勻一致的特性,而造成發光表現上的差異。而藉由將每個次畫素特性與所有次畫素102的平均亮度相對應(mapping),可估計每個次畫素102之補償參數,並可根據每個次畫素102之補償參數建立補償表105,而寫入並儲存至記憶體103中。之後當資訊裝置1欲顯示影像,處理電路110將會參考補償表105,並以不同的電壓來驅動每個次畫素102,以正確地顯示影像,並消除Mura缺陷。此外,熟此技藝者應能夠瞭解其他建立補償表105的方式,亦在本發明所欲涵蓋之範圍內。
處理電路110可實施為一特殊應用積體電路(ASIC,Application-specific integrated circuit),並可包含電流感測器112與處理器114於其中。圖1所示之處理電路110乃僅是範例,而電流感測器112與處理器114能夠以不同於圖1顯示的方式實施,例如電流感測器112與處理器114可分別實施在個別的電路上。每次當電流感測器112啟動時,電流感測器112感測多個次畫素中至少一個次畫素在一特定電壓下的電流。電流感測器112更包含類比/數位轉換器113,以產生代表所感測電流之值。接著以此感測電流值,參考一對應該此次畫素老化現象之預定關係,以決定此次畫素的補償參數,並取代先前儲存在補償表105中的補償參數。隨後當資訊裝置1欲顯示影像時,處理電路110從訊號源(圖未示)接收原始(Raw)影像資料以及參考更新後的補償表,藉此以一調整後的電壓來驅動此次畫素,而正確地顯示影像,而OLED的老化現象將不會被使用者所察覺。相較於先前技術,資訊裝置1顯而具有強大的優點,因為資訊裝置1利用了補償表105,而同時對Mura缺陷與OLED老化現象進行補償。在此實施例中,為了對製程相關的Mura缺陷與OLED老化現象進行補償,每個次畫素的初始補償參數顯得重要,且在隨後的補償表更新中都應該被參考,否則發光材料的老化現象也許可以被補償,但Mura缺陷卻未必,換言之,面板的Mura補償是根據最初始的補償參數,後續根據每個次畫素的老化程度,以原始參數值為基礎加以調變,就能兼顧老化現象的補正,同時不顯露出原始的Mura缺陷。
圖2的曲線即為前述之預定關係之範例,其中當因為OLED次畫素102的電阻增高而使得所感測的電流變小時,則需要更大的補償參數以正確地顯示影像資料。這些預定關係(圖2中的曲線)可與次畫素的顏色相關,因為OLED的老化現象可隨著所顯示的顏色而有所不同。換言之,如圖2所示,紅綠藍(RGB)之次畫素適用不同的曲線。此外,此預定關係也可能與此OLED裝置的操作溫度、所使用的發光材料、以及使用頻率相關。因此,根據此預定關係,處理器114能夠一直參考到適合的曲線,判斷補償強度,而更新補償表。此外,此預定關係可被儲存在記憶體103或是實施在電流感測器112或是處理電路110,本發明並不欲加以限制。
在另一實施例中,每次當電流感測器112被啟動時,電流感測器112對顯示面板101上所有個別的次畫素102進行感測,接著根據與前述程序相似的程序以及前述預定關係,調整補償表105中每個次畫素的補償參數。換言之,此補償表的更新是針對所有的次畫素,但可能需要較長的時間才能完成。如圖3所示,在另一較有效率的實施例中,電流感測器112乃是對一組次畫素進行感測,並在次畫素102之陰極處感測其電流總和,而不是感測每個個別次畫素的電流。因此,電流感測器112的類比/數位轉換器113將產生代表此電流總和之值。接著根據此電流總和值以及另外的預定關係,在補償表105中此組次畫素的補償參數將一同被調整。此種更新作法一次乃是針對一組次畫素,而不是一次只針對一個次畫素,因此所花費的時間較少。此外,因為一組次畫素的電流總和遠大於背景的漏電流(leakage current),因此所得到的訊號雜訊比(S/N ratio)將優於單一次畫素的電流。而圖3所示的此組次畫素的可只包含單色(紅、綠、或藍)的次畫素,但在其他實施例中,一組次畫素中可包含紅、綠、藍次畫素的任意組合。
在又一實施例中,電流感測器112只感測顯示面板101上特定位置的次畫素的電流(或其電流總和),而只有這些次畫素的補償參數會被更新,其他次畫素的補償參數則保持不變。此特定位置的選擇可以是次畫素發光最頻繁的位置,例如在資訊裝置1的顯示螢幕上呈現現在日期與時間資訊的固定位置。
而為了避免干擾面板10的正常運作,電流感測器可只在資訊裝置1的“待機”模式或是“螢幕保護”模式下,或是資訊裝置1進行充電時,才啟動發揮作用。在另一實施例中,電流感測器112可根據使用者自行設定的條件而啟動。舉例來說,可透過資訊裝置1上之特定按鍵(圖未示)而輸入指令,以啟動電流感測器112去偵測一個或多個次畫素102的電流,進而更新補償表105。選擇性地,使用者透過資訊裝置1之使用介面(例如一選單,圖1未示),選擇面板101上一區域,藉此電流感測器112感測在此區域中次畫素的電流,並在補償表105中更新這些次畫素的補償參數。
根據上述的資訊裝置1與OLED顯示器10,本發明更提供一顯示影像的方法,如圖4流程圖所示之實施例。步驟401在記憶體103中建立包含顯示面板101上每個次畫素102補償參數的補償表。舉例來說,如同圖1所示的補償表105,而步驟401中的補償表乃是根據每個次畫素102的特性而建立。接著在步驟403中,使用者設定執行下列步驟405與407的條件。舉例來說,使用者可設定當每次資訊裝置1進行充電時就執行步驟405與407。
步驟405利用電流感測器112感測顯示面板101上至少一個次畫素102的電流,或是在另一實施例中,感測顯示面板101上每一次畫素102的電流,或是在又一實施例中,感測顯示面板101上一組次畫素102的電流總和。在步驟407中,根據步驟405中所感測到的電流以及圖2中的“電流-補償參數”曲線,對記憶體103中的補償表進行更新。在步驟409中,當要顯示影像時,處理器114會從資料源(圖未示)接收原始影像資料。接著在步驟411中處理器114根據影像資料以及更新後的補償表,產生補償後的影像資料。在步驟413中,則利用顯示面板101以調整後的電壓驅動次畫素102,以顯示補償後的影像資料。
圖5則顯示根據本發明另一實施例之方法流程圖。步驟501,如同前述步驟401,在記憶體103中建立包含補償參數的補償表。接著在步驟503中,使用者決定顯示面板101上一區域,進而選取位於此區域中的一組次畫素,以執行後續步驟505與507。舉例來說,使用者可決定次畫素發光最頻繁的區域,也就是次畫素的補償參數最需要被經常更新的區域。
步驟505利用電流感測器112感測步驟503中所選區域中每個次畫素102的電流,或是在另一實施例中,感測所選區域中所有次畫素102的電流總和。在步驟507中,根據步驟505中所感測到的電流以及圖2中的“電流-補償參數”曲線,對記憶體103中的補償表進行更新。在步驟509中,當要顯示影像時,處理器114會從資料源(圖未示)接收原始影像資料。接著在步驟511中處理器114根據影像資料以及更新後的補償表,產生補償後的影像資料。在步驟513中,則利用顯示面板101以調整後的電壓驅動次畫素102,以顯示補償後的影像資料。
藉著以上設置,本發明提供一種新的OLED顯示器,含有此OLED顯示器的資訊裝置,與一種在OLED顯示器中顯示影像的方法,其中對於Mura缺陷或是材料老化所造成的不均勻狀況能夠加以補償。同時也能針對顯示器中一特定區域的不均勻狀況進行補償。此外,本發明可根據使用者的設定補償前述的不均勻狀況,特別是在OLED顯示器或是資訊裝置出廠後而送達消費者之後。

- 如請求項1所述之顯示器,其中該補償表乃根據所感測之電流以及一預定關係而加以更新。
- 如請求項2所述之顯示器,其中該預定關係與該次畫素之顏色相關。
- 如請求項2所述之顯示器,其中該預定關係與該次畫素之操作溫度、發光材料及/或使用頻率相關。
- 如請求項1所述之顯示器,其中該電流感測器供感測該複數個次畫素之電流總和,而該補償表乃根據該電流總和而加以更新。
- 如請求項5所述之顯示器,其中該複數個次畫素位於該顯示面板上一預定區域。
- 如請求項6所述之顯示器,其中該補償表乃根據所感測之電流總和以及一預定關係而加以更新,而該預定關係與該預定區域相關。
- 如請求項5所述之顯示器,其中該電流感測器在該複數個次畫素之陰極感測該電流總和。
- 如請求項1所述之顯示器,其中該電流感測器根據一使用者設定而啟動。
- 一種資訊裝置,包含:一種有機發光二極體顯示器,包含:一顯示面板包含複數個次畫素;一記憶體儲存一補償表,其中該補償表含有Mura補償的資料,且該補償表乃預先根據每個次畫素之特性與該複數個次畫素之平均亮度而建立;以及一處理電路,包含:一電流感測器,感測該複數個次畫素中一組次畫素之電流總和,其中該補償表根據該電流感測器所感測到之電流而加以更新;以及 一處理器,接收影像資料並根據該影像資料與更新之該補償表產生補償影像資料;其中,該顯示面板藉由驅動包含被該電流感測器所感測之該組次畫素之該複數個次畫素以顯示該補償影像資料,進而因應該補償影像資料而發光,藉此補償Mura缺陷。
- 如請求項10所述之資訊裝置,其中該資訊裝置係為一手機、一數位相機、一個人數位助理、一筆記型電腦、一桌上型電腦、一電視、一全球定位系統、一車用顯示器、一航空用顯示器、一數位相框或一可攜式DVD放影機。
- 一種在一有機發光二極體顯示器中顯示影像之方法,其中該有機發光二極體顯示器包含具有複數個次畫素之一顯示面板、一記憶體、一電流感測器與一處理器,該方法包含:(a)在該記憶體中建立一補償表,其中該補償表含有Mura補償的資料,且該補償表乃預先根據每個次畫素之特性與該複數個次畫素之平均亮度而建立;(b)由該電流感測器感測該複數個次畫素中一組次畫素之電流總和;(c)根據該電流感測器所感測到之電流而更新該補償表;(d)由該處理器接收影像資料;(e)由該處理器根據該影像資料與更新之該補償表產生補償影像資料;以及(f)由該顯示面板藉由驅動包含被該電流感測器所感測之該組次畫素之該複數個次畫素以顯示該補償影像資料,進而因應該補償影像資料而發光,藉此補償Mura缺陷。
- 如請求項12所述之方法,其中步驟(c)包含根據所感測之電流以及一預定關係而更新該補償表。
- 如請求項13所述之方法,其中該預定關係與該次畫素之顏色相關。
- 如請求項12所述之方法,其中步驟(b)包含感測該複數個次畫素之電流總和,而步驟(c)包含根據根據該電流總和而更新該補償表。
- 如請求項15所述之方法,更包含:選取該複數個次畫素以對應該顯示面板上一預定區域。
- 如請求項16所述之方法,其中步驟(c)包含:根據所感測之電流總和以及一預定關係而更新該補償表,而該預定關係與該預定區域相關。
- 如請求項15所述之方法,其中步驟(b)包含:在該複數個次畫素之陰極感測該電流總和。
