Abstract
An industrial robot having several axes of freedom of movement comprises an operating members supporting arm (16) pivotally mounted at the top of a supporting column (14) for movement about a horizontal axis from a horizontal angular medium position under the control of a linear actuator (32) pivotally connected at one end to the supporting column (14) and at the other end to the supporting arm (16). As shown the linear actuator is an electromechanical jack having a worm (54) and lead nut (58), the worm (54) being rotatably mounted within an elongated housing (44) and driven by a motor (34) secured to the housing (44) and the lead nut (58) being coupled to an outer tubular jacket (68) through slots in the housing 44 by keys (60, 62). The nut (58) may have recirculating balls. The upper end of the jacket (68) is closed by a cap (70) to form a cylinder within which slides a piston formed by a disc (78) secured to closure cap (48) of the housing (44). A gauged hole (88) is provided in the cap (70) so that air in the cylinder acts as a shock absorber. Springs (84, 86) are mounted at the ends of the worm (54). <IMAGE>
