1282057 Making liquid-cooled electrical conductors ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AB 4 Dec 1969 [5 Dec 1968] 59257/69 Heading B3A [Also in Divisions H1 and H2] In a directly-cooled conductor for a liquid cooled electrical winding comprising a cooling tube 3 surrounded by a conductor bar 1, the conductor bar is made with a continuous crosssection along the greater part of the total conductor length of the winding and the cooling tube is expanded to provide heat-conducting contact with the bore of the conductor bar. The cooling tube 3 is slightly longer than the conductor bar and its projecting ends are sealed in high pressure casings 5, 6, by rings 8, 9. The central cavity 2 of the bar 1 provides sufficient clearance around the tube 3 to prevent damage to the tube as it is inserted. Pressure fluid is then admitted through a conduit 12 such that plastic deformation of both bar and tube occurs and the entire surface of the cavity 2 is in contact with the tube. When the pressure is released, elastic contraction of the bar is greater than that of the tube, suitable materials being copper for the former and stainless steel for the latter. The tube may also be expanded by passing a series of mandrels of increasing diameter therethrough or by igniting an explosive charge in the tube.
