Abstract

899,523. Consolidating by pressure; altering physical structure. ENGINEERING SUPERVISION CO. Jan. 7, 1960 [Jan. 8, 1959], No. 632/60. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXIX] High pressure apparatus for consolidating an article 10 disposed in a cavity 18 comprises a plurality of radially-acting pressure-multiplying elements 12-15 which substantially enclose the cavity and have outer faces of larger area than their inner faces, and a pressure transmitting medium 21 surrounding the elements and disposed within an outer shell 22. The elements 10 made of cemented tungsten carbide and separated by thin gaps 20, are surrounded by a jacket formed from layers of rubber 21 and disposed in a housing 22. Both the rubber jacket 21 and the housing 22 are preferably in halves to facilitate insertion and removal of the article 10 which may be a shaft or a turbine blade. Further pressure-multiplying elements may be disposed at the ends of the article, Fig. 1 (not shown). The latter, Fig. 3, may be surrounded by a sleeve of graphite 26 engaged by heating electrodes 25 fed through conductors 24, and further enclosed in a shell 19 made of a pressure-transmitting substance such as pyrophillite. A thermocouple may be connected through the shell 19 to measure the temperature of the workpiece. Pressure is applied to the rubber jacket 21 by a piston 28 fed with hydraulic fluid from a pump through a pipe 30. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the piston is omitted and the liquid acts directly on the outside of the rubber jacket 21 which is surrounded by a clearance space. The inner layers of rubber may be more rigid than the outer layers to prevent their extrusion into the gaps 20. Small collapsible spacers may be disposed initially in these gaps 20. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5, (not shown), tne elements are enclosed between two rubber pads disposed in a power press. It is stated that the apparatus of the invention will produce pressures exceeding 200,000 atmospheres and may be used for consolidating articles of complex shape to improve their physical properties. The cavity 19 and the elements 12-15 may be of various shapes. Specification 899,524 and U.S.A. Specification 2,375,599 are referred to.
