Description
Flytende krystaller har spesielt 1 de siste årtier funnet inngang i de forskjelligste tekniske områder, hvor det forlanges elektrooptiske og visualiseringsegenskaper (for eksempel i ur-, lommeregnere- og skrivemaskinanvisere). Disse visualiseringsinnretningene ved "bruk av de dielektriske utretningseffekter i de nematiske, cholesteriske og/eller smektiske faser av flytende krystallinske forbindelser, idet de, forårsaket av den dielektriske anisotropi, inntar den molekylære lengdeakse av forbindelsen som foretrukket utretning i et anlagt elektrisk felt. De vanlige koblingstider ved disse visualiseringsinnretninger er imidlertid for langsomme for mange andre potensielle anvendelsesområder av flytende krystaller, som i og for seg er meget lovende kjemiske forbindelser for teknikken på grunn av de egenartede egenskaper. Denne ulempe gjør seg spesielt merkbar, når noe som nødvendigvis er tilfelle ved større visualiseringsflater, et stort antall av billedpunkter må styres, hvorved produk-sjonsomkostningene av storflatede apparater, som video-apparater oscillografer eller fjernsyn-, radar-, EDV- eller skriveautomatbilledskjermer ville bli for høy.
Ved siden av de nematiske og cholesteriske flytende krystaller har i noen få år i økende grad også hellende ("tilted")-smektiske flytende krystall-faser vunnet betydning. Når slike hellende-smektiske faser, spesielt smektiske C- (Sc- eller SmC-)faser tilsettes egnede doterlngsstoffer som viser et såkalt spontan polarisasjon (Ps) eller induserer en slik i flytende krystall-fasen, så kan fasene omdannes til ferroelektriske flytende krystall-faser (enheten for Ps er nC'cm-<2> ), se for eksempel Lagerwall et al. i publikasjonen "Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals for Displays", SID Symposium, oktobermøte, 1985, San Diego (USA). Disse ferroelektriske flytende krystall-faser har, sammenlignet med de vanlige TN-("twisted nematic"-)celler, rundt en faktor 1 000 hurtigere koblingstider, slik at de også på grunn av andre positive egenskaper som en bistabil koblingsmulighet, er gode potensielle kandidater for det ovenfor anførte anvendelses-område (for eksempel over en matriksstyring).
I WO-A 86/02937 omtales som komponenter av ferroelektriske flytende krystall-blandinger blant annet forbindelser med formelen
hvor det dreier seg om arylkarboksylsyreestere av 2-hydroksy-propionsyreestere, og R kan bety metyl, etyl, propyl og n-butyl. Den spontane polarisasjon Ps for disse forbindelser, bestemt i en 10 mol-# blanding med racemisk CE 8, angis ved en temperatur 10° under Sc<*->S^-overgangen til 72,6 nC*cm-<2 >(ekstrapolert rent stoff); koblingstider og andre anven-delsesrelevante parametere angis ikke. I EP-A 0175591 omtales som bestanddeler av flytende krystall-blandinger blant annet forbindelser med formelen
hvor symbolene har følgende betydning:
R^: en lineær, forgrenet eller cyklisk mettet eller
umettet hydrokarbonrest på 1 til 20 C-atomer; RB:
idet R<1> til R<5> skal bety alkyl- eller alkyloksygrupper med 1 til 20 C-atomer og n henholdsvis m skal bety 1 eller 2. Disse forbindelser beskrives som fordelaktig til oppnåelse av bistabile forhold i ferroelektriske flytende krystall-blandinger.
Oppfinnelsens gjenstand er nu forbindelser, som ved høye verdier for den egne eller i flytende krystall-faser induserte spontane polarisasjon Ps har strukturelementer, som også gjør dem "forenelige" det vil si blandbare, med andre komponenter i flytende krystall-systemer, spesielt med esterforbindelser med Sc-fase eller fenylpyrimidinforbin-delser med Sc-fase, da blant annet den mesogene del av molekylet ofte er ansvarlig for en god "forenelighet" med de andre blandingskomponentene i flytende krystall-systemene. Derved må disse forbindelser selv ikke ubetinget være flytende krystallinske, spesielt ikke ubetinget ha en SmC-fase.
Oppfinnelsens gjenstand er spesielt også de nye i tabellen oppstilte forbindelser.
I henhold til dette angår foreliggende oppfinnelse chirale aryloksypropionsyreestere som karakteriseres ved den generelle formel
der R<1>, A, B og R<2> har følgende betydning:
R<1>: en rettlinjet C^i^alkyl- eller -alkyloksyrest eller
en forgrenet C^^alkyl- eller alkoksyrest;
A: fenylylen, bifenylylen, pyrlmldylfenylylen, fenylkar-bonyloksyfenylylen eller ((fenylkarbonyloksy)-fenyl-karbonyloksy)-fenylylen;
B: en kjemisk binding eller fenylen, bifenylylen eller
pyrlmldylfenylylen; og
R<2> a) når B er en kjemisk binding, betyr en rettlinjet Ci_i5alkylrest eller en Cg-ioa-lkylrest som inneholder er asymmetrisk C-atom som er substituert med en CH3-, halogen- eller en COOC2H5-gruppe, eller en C3_iøalkylrest som inneholder to naboplasserte asymmetriske C-atomer, hvorav et er substituert med halogen og det andre med en CEtø-gruppe, eller som sammen med et oksygenatom danner en oksiranring, eller
b) når B betyr fenylen, bifenylylen eller pyrlmldylfenylylen, alkylrester som under a) eller
alkoksyrester med samme antall av C-atomer og samme oppbygning av alkylgruppen som under a).
Spesielt foretrukne aryloksypropionsyreestere av forbindelser, der R<1>, A, B og R<2> i formel (I) har følgende betydning: R<1>: en rettlinjet C7_^-6alkyl- eller -alkyloksyrest,
A: en fenylen-, bisfenylen-, pyrimidylfenyl-, fenylkar-bonyloksyfenyl- eller [(fenylkarbonyloksy)-fenylkar-bonyloksy]-fenylrest, og
B: en kjemisk binding og
R<2>: en rettlinjet eller forgrenet Cg^g-alkylrest, eller B: en fenylen-, bisfenylen- eller pyrimidylfenylrest og R2: en rettlinjet eller forgrenet Cg^Q-alkyl- eller
—alkyloksyrest.
Forbindelsen ifølge oppfinnelsen med den generelle formel (I) kan for eksempel, som oppført i skjema 1, fremstilles ved omsetning av en mesogen fenol (II) med en chiral propion-syreforbindelse (III) til den chirale aryloksyforbindelse (IV), som derefter ved basisk eller sur katalysert forsåpning overføres til den chirale aryloksypropionsyre (V), forestring av (V) med hydroksyforbindelsen (VI) gir forbindelsen ifølge oppfinnelsen (I).
Edduktene (II) henholdsvis (VI) er litteraturkjente, likeledes som det chirale propionsyrederivat (III), hvor X kan ha følgende betydning: OH, halogen, 4-toluensulfonyl-oksy, metylsulfonyloksy, trifluormetylsulfonyl.
Fremgangsmåten, hvormed forbindelsene (II) og (III) sammen-knyttes racemiseringsfritt med hverandre til forbindelsene (IV), er likeledes kjent for fagfolk fra litteraturen.
Således kan alkalifenolater omsettes med 2-(sulfonyloksy)-karboksylsyreforbindelser under bibehold av chiraliteten til fenyloksykarboksylsyreforbindelser, som omtalt av Burkard og Effenberger, "Racemisierungsfreie Substitution von 2-
(Sulfonyloxy)karbonsaureestern mit Sauerstoff- und Schwefel-nucleophilen", i "Chem. Ber.", 119, 1594-1612 (1986).
Reaksjonen av fenoler med alkoholer til fenolalkyletere ved hjelp av dietalazodikarboksylat og trifenylfosfin, slik det omtales av Mitsonobu, "The Use of Diethyl Azodicarboxylate and Triphenylphisphine in Synthesis and Transformation of Natural Products", i "Synthesis", 1981, 1-28, kan også anvendes til fremstilling av (IV) og således til slutt av (I), når det bringes til reaksjon melkesyreetylester (III, X = OH) med en mesogen fenol (II).
Forsåpningen av (IV) til (V) og forestring av (V) med (VI) til (I) kan foregå efter for fagfolk kjente metoder.
Ved hjelp av oppfinnelsens forbindelser kan man oppnå torsjonerbare flytende krystall-faser med et innhold av minst en chiral forbindelse, som som chiral forbindelse minst inneholder en forbindelse med den generelle formel (I). Med begrepet "torsjonerbare flytende krystall-fase" menes å forstå nematiske, cholesteriske eller hellende ("tilted")-smektiske, spesielt SmC-, faser.
De torsjonerbare væskekrystall-faser består av 2 til 20, fortrinnsvis 2 til 15 komponenter, herunder minst en av de chirale forbindelser ifølge oppfinnelsen. De andre bestanddeler velges fortrinnsvis fra det kjente forbindelser med nematiske, cholesteriske og/eller hellende-smektiske faser, hertil hører eksempelvis Schiff-baser, bifenyler, terfenyler, fenylcykloheksaner, cykloheksylbifenyler, pyrimidiner, kanelsyreestere, cholesterolestere, forskjellige broslåtte terminalpolare, flerkjernede estere av p-alkylbenzosyrer. Vanligvis foreligger de i handelen oppnåelige flytende krystall-faser allerede før tilsetning av den eller de chirale forbindelser som blandinger av de forskjelligste komponenter, hvorav minst en er mesogen, det vil si som forbindelser som i derivatisert form eller i blanding med bestemte kokomponenter viser en flytende krystall-fase, det vil si minst lar det vente en enantiotrop (klartemperatur > smeltetemperatur) eller monotrop (klartemperatur < smeltetemperatur) mesofasedannelse.
Spesielt inneholder de torsjonerbare flytende krystall-faser ved siden av minst en av de chirale forbindelser ifølge oppfinnelsen en esterforblndelse med Sc-fase, for eksempel 4-alkyloksybenzosyrefenylester, eller en fenylpyrimidinforbln-delse med Sc-fase, for eksempel en 4-(5-alkylpyrimidin-2-yl)-1-alkoksybenzen. Av forbindelser ifølge oppfinnelsen inneholder flytende krystall-fasen vanligvis 0,01 til 70 vekt-£, spesielt 0,05 til 50 vekt-#.
Forbindelsene ifølge oppfinnelsen er spesielt egnet som doterlngsstoffer for hellende-smektiske flytende krystall-faser, da de omdanner disse til ferroelektriske flytende krystall-faser, verdiene for den spontane polarisasjon (Ps) ligger i område fra ca. 10 til 120 nC'cm~<2> (lineært ekstrapolert til den rene forbindelse).

Nr. 5 (R)-(+)-2-[4-(5-oktyl-pyrimidin-2-yl)fenyl]oksy-
propionsyreoktylester (I, R<*>: CgH^7, A B: -, R<2>: C8H17)
I 75 ml tetrahydrofuran oppløses 5,25 g (0,02 mmol) trifenyl-fosfon og 3,15 ml (0,02 mol) azodikarboksylsyredietylester ved 0°C. Efter 15 minutter tilsettes 5,69 g (0,02 mol) 4-(5-oktyl-pyrimidin-2-yl)fenol (II, R<1>: C8H17, A og 2,36 (0,02 mol) (S)-(-)-melkesyreetylester (III), X: OH). 16 timer senere bringes det til tørr tilstand under vakuum og resten kromatograferes over 200 g kiselgel med diklormetan som elueringsmiddel. Det fremkommer 5,7 g (74#) av en farveløs olje (IV, R<1>: C8H17, A:
Det hele tas opp i 30 ml metanol og blandes dråpevis ved 15°C med 33 #-ig natronlut Inntil det ved luttilsetningen ikke mere opptrer utfelling og esteren (IV) ikke mere lar seg påvise tynnsjiktskromatografisk. Ved tilsetning av ION HC1 lnnst.111 ess nTT-vfirri 1 fin t.11 9. na rifin nt.ffilt.fi stxrrt* ( V. T?l i

vaskes med vann og tørkes.
4,9 g (93#) farveløse krystaller med smeltepunkt 101-102°C [a]g2 + 19,6 (c=5, CE2C12).
1,5 g (0,004 mol) av denne karboksylsyre forenes med 0,65 g (0,005 mol) n-oktanol (VI, B: -, R<2>: C8H17), 1,03 g (0,005 mol) dicykloheksylkarbodiimid og 0,005 g 4-dimetylaminopyri-din i 30 ml diklormetan. Efter 24 timers henstand filtreres blandingen, filtratet kromatograferes over kiselgel med diklormetan, det oppnås 1,27 g (6856) av en farveløs olje.

og (R)-(l)-melkesyreetylester (III, X: OH) ved
Mitsonobu-reaksjonen og hydrogenering i 100 ml tetrahydrofuran med 1 g Pd/C (10SÉ) ved 27°C og normaltrykk inntil avslutning av H2-opptak. Katalysatoren frafUtreres, oppløsningsmidlet avdestilleres og det oppnås 6,5 g (S)-(-)-2-(4-hydroksyfenyl)oksypropionsyreetylester (IV, R<1>: -,

, B: -, R<2>: C2H5), [a]25:-43,8° (neat).
En oppløsning av 6,1 g (0,029 mol) av denne forbindelse i 20 ml pyridin blandes ved 10°C dråpevis med 8,9 g (0,03 mol) 4-decyloksybenzoylklorid. Efter 3 timers omrøring ved i0"C helles det hele i 200 ml isvann, pH-verdien innstilles ved tilsetning av HC1 til 3 og blandingen ekstraheres med diklormetan. Ekstraktet kromatograferes på kiselgel med diklormetan og den produktholdige fraksjon omkrystalliseres fra metanol: 4,1 g (40# av det teoretiske) farveløse krystaller [a]g<3>: -26,1" (c=l, CHC13).
^H-NMR- og IR-spektrum samt elementanalyse er i overens-stemmelse med den angitte struktur.
Ved anvendelse av de tilsvarende eddukter er disse for-skrifter representativ for alle forbindelser i følgende tabell I.
Anvendelseseksempler 1 til 26
For undersøkelse av virkningen av de ovenfor omtalte forbindelser som doterlngsstoffer i flytende krystall-systemer blandes disse i konsentrasjoner på 10 mol-% med racematene av forbindelsene A eller B eller den enantiomere C.
og verdiene bestemmes for den spontane polarisasjon (Ps i nC*cm-<2> ), for koblingstiden t (i ps ved ± IO<7> Vm-<*>) og for den optiske helningsvinkel av SmC<*->fase 0 (i °) av blandingen. Ps-verdiene måles efter metoder til Sawyer et al. ("Phys. Rev.", 35, 269 til 273, 1930), idet det anvendes en spesiell målecelle [Skarp et al. i "Ferroelectric Letters", Vol. 06, 000 (1986)], hvor man også bestemmer t- og 0-verdiene. Ved en cellesjikttykkelse på 2 pm oppnås ved skjæring en enhetlig planar orientering fra flytende krystaller i SmC<*->fasen (SSFLC-Technik, Clark et al., "Appl. Phys. Lett.", 36, 899 (1980)]. Efter anordning av målecellen mellom to kryssede polarisatorer foregår bestemmelsen av koblingstiden ved hjelp av en fotodiode og den av den optiske helningsvinkel henholdsvis koblingsvinkel ved dreining av målecellen fra maksimal til minimal lysgjennomgang ved måleanordningen. Tabell II angir resultatene for blandingene. Spalte 1 angir nummeret av forbindelsen ifølge oppfinnelsen i henhold til tabell I, spalte 2 angir blandingskomponentene A, B eller C, spalte 3 Smc<*->område, idet verdiene i parentes angir den underkjølbare grense av SmC<*->område, spalte 4 angir den spontane polarisasjon, spalte 5 koblingstiden, spalte 6 koblingsvinkelen og spalte 7 måletemperaturen.
Claims (2)
1.
Chirale aryloksypropionsyreestere karakterisert ved den generelle formel
der R<1>, A, B og R<2> har følgende betydning: R<1>: en rettlinjet C^i^alkyl- eller -alkyloksyrest eller
en forgrenet C^i^alkyl- eller alkoksyrest; A: fenylylen, bifenylylen, pyrlmldylfenylylen, fenylkar-
bonyloksyfenylylen eller ((fenylkarbonyloksy)-fenylkarbonyloksy)-fenylylen; B: en kjemisk binding eller fenylen, bifenylylen eller
pyrlmldylfenylylen; og R<2> a) når B er en kjemisk binding, betyr en rettlinjet cl-15alkvlrest eller en C2_ioalkylrest som inneholder er asymmetrisk C-atom som er substituert med en CH3-, halogen- eller en C00C2H5~gruppe, eller en C3_i(jalkylrest som inneholder to naboplasserte asymmetriske C-atomer, hvorav et er substituert med halogen og det andre med en CB^-gruppe, eller som sammen med et oksygenatom danner en oksiranring, eller b) når B betyr fenylen, bifenylylen eller pyrlmldylfenylylen, alkylrester som under a) eller alkoksyrester med samme antall av C-atomer og samme oppbygning av alkylgruppen som under a).
