Abstract

The dock has a base with one or more compartments, and stabilisers extending upwards from the base to hold it steady when under water. Ballast is admitted to the compartments or removed from the, to sink or raise the dock under a ship etc. The stabilisers can be in the form of a series of columns, and a crane can be provided, travelling on rails along the tops of the columns. The base can be square or rectangular in plan view, with a column at each corner, and ballasting can be effected by pumping water in or out of the compartments, pumps being mounted inside one or more of the columns.
