Abstract
Un integrante de Zymomonas posee la habilidad para fermentar la pentosa en etanol. El operon que codifica para las enzimas fermentadoras de pentosa es integrado en el genoma de Zymomonas en un evento de doble integracion de recombinacion y transposicion homologas. Cada operon puede incluir mas de una secuencia que codifica a la enzima reductora de pentosa. En algunas modalidades el integrante incluye secuencias de enzimas que codifican a xilosa isomerasa, xiluloquinasa, transquetolasa y transaldolasa. Los integrantes de Zymomonas son muy estables, y retienen la actividad para producir la enzima fermentadora de pentosa por entre 80 a 160 generaciones. Los integrantes son tambien resistentes a la inhibicion del acetato, como lo demuestra la eficiente produccion de etanol aun en la presencia de 8 hasta 16 gramos de acetato por litro de medio.
