Abstract
Se describen minerales de arcilla dilatables o esponjables que se componen de laminillas de tres capas elementales de una capa central de iones de metal rodeado por oxígeno octaédricamente (capa octaédrica), la cual capa está rodeada de dos capas que contienen átomos de silicio rodeadas tetraédicamente (capas tetraédricas), un numero de tales laminillas elementales se apilan opcionalmente. Las dimensiones de las laminillas de arcilla varían de 0.01 mu 0m a 1 æm, el numero de las laminillas de tres capas elementales apiladas varían de, en promedio, una laminilla a veinte laminillas, en tanto que en la capa octaédrica a lo más 30% de los iones de metal han sido reemplazados por iones de una valencia más baja y en las capas tetraédricas a lo más 15% de los iones de silicio han sido reemplazados por iones de una valencia menor, tal reemplazo se ha llevado a cabo en por lo menos una de estas capas y estas capas tienen una deficiencia de carga positiva debido al reemplazo. Se preparan al traer el pH de un líquido acuoso que contiene los componentes de la arcilla a un valor de 3 - 9 y la temperatura del líquido a un valor de 60 a 350 degree C y mantenerlo a dicho valor por el tiempo requerido para la reaccion, el pH se mantiene a un valor dentro de dicho rango.
