Abstract
La presente invencion se refiere a un método aparato que proporcionan desempeño mejorado al modular la fase optica y polarizacion de una señal optica, con una forma de onda periodica que tiene un contenido armonico que es más complejo que el asociado con una forma de onda sinuosidal simple. Un modulador de fase recibe una señal optica en la cual se han modulado datos a una frecuencia predeterminada. El modulador de fase modula la fase de la señal optica en una forma continua con la forma de onda periodica con armonicos complejos, en donde la frecuencia de modulacion de fase fundamental es igual a la misma frecuencia predeterminada en la cual los datos se modulan sobre la señal optica. En otra modalidad ilustrativa de la invencion, un modulador de polarizacion además procesa la señal optica al modular el estado de polarizacion de la señal en una forma continua con la forma de onda periodica con armonicos complejos, en donde la frecuencia de modulacion de polarizacion fundamental es igual a la misma frecuencia predeterminada en la cual los datos se modulan sobre la señal optica. Además de modularse continuamente, la modulacion de polarizacion se realiza de manera tal que el valor promedio del estado de polarizacion sobre cada ciclo de modulacion substancialmente es igual a cero.
