한편, 상동나무(Sageretia thea)는 갈매나무과 상동나무속에 속하는 것으로 동부와 남부 아시아, 북아메리카에 약 10종이 분포되어 있으며 우리나라에는 1종의 상동나무와 변종으로 털상동나무가 자라고 있다. 우리나라의 따뜻한 남해안과 남쪽섬 및 제주도 해변의 산기슭에서 자라며, 잎이 겨울을 난다고 해서 생동목(生冬木)이라고도 불린다. 개화기는 9~11월이고 결실기는 이듬해 4~5월이며, 열매는 검은 자주색으로 대부분 둥글다. 상동나무를 정금나무라고도 부르며, 생약명은 작매등(雀梅藤), 이명으로는 대절자, 대각자, 쇄미자, 사궁근, 미쇄목이라고도 부른다. 상동나무의 잎과 잔가지 열매는 강력한 해독작용을 갖고 있어 주로 옴과 옻 독을 풀어주는 효능을 가지고 있다. 또한 새살이 돋아나게 하는 성분으로 대부분의 피부병과 타박상, 옴, 창상, 탕화상 등에 큰 효험이 있다. 뿌리는 작매등근(雀梅藤根)이라고 하며, 관절염에 효과가 있는 것으로 알려져 있다(배기환, 한국의 약용식물). 또한, 민간요법으로 감기치료를 위한 약탕, 간염 등에 사용되었으며, 상동나무 잎의 에틸에테르 가용성 분획 중 신규 항산화성 플라보노이드 물질이 알려진 바 있다.On the other hand, homologous tree (Sageretia thea ) belongs to the genus Sageretia, and about 10 species are distributed in eastern and southern Asia and North America.
