Abstract

PURPOSE:To readily obtain a sooty silica material useful as large-sized soot material free from cracking, etc., by successively depositing specific fine particles on a rotating heat-resistant substrate while changing heat energy per unit time along the radius direction of the substrate. CONSTITUTION:Each burner 1a of oxyhydrogen flame is arranged on a burner stand 11 to form a burner line 1. Then SiCl4, etc., together with a carrier gas is sent to flames 4 of each burner 1a and hydrolyzed to give sooty Si fine particles 3a. Then a heat-resistant substrate 2 is rotated around an axis thereof, reciprocated at a given amplitude in the length direction and fine particles 3a are deposited on the substrate 2 to form a soot material 3. Then the quantity of heat energy (flames 4) per unit time is controlled by a feed source 61 for H2 to be sent to the burners 1a, flow rate control valve 64, etc., and the fine particles are deposited in such a way that the deposition density of the fine particles 3a has the minimum displacement point positioned in an intermediate zone sandwiched between to the site of outer surface of the soot material 3 and the inner site in contact with the substrate 2 to form a sooty silica material.
