Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable high-yield production of the title compound of high purity, which is used as a starting substance of 3-aminopropanol which is used as a starting substance of surface active agents or as an organic synthetic intermediate, by pyrolyzing biscyanoethyl ether in the presence of a specific amount of a strong base catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Using a strong base catalyst in an amount of 1X10<5>-6.0X10<3>mol., preferably 1X10<4>-2.5-10<3>mol. per mold. of the substrate, biscyanoethyl ether is pyrolyzed at 75-125 deg.C under 3-10mmHg pressure to give ethylene cyanohydrin. The strong base catalyst is a mixture of an alkali metal hydroxide and/or tri-alkali metal phosphate with dialkali-metal phosphate and/or alkali metal basic borate. It is preferred that the catalyst is used in the form of a solution in a solvent such as methanol, to enhance the solubility and dispersibility of the catalyst.
