Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compounds with a high selectivity continuously in a relatively short time, by reacting a β-propiolactone with exygen gas in the presence of a metal of group VIII in the periodic table in water, etc.
CONSTITUTION: A β-propiolactone, e.g. β-propiolactone, or its derivative of formula (R1 is H or 1W4C alkyl group) is reacted with oxygen gas or a gas containing oxygen in the presence of one type or a mixuture of two or more types of metals of group VIII in the periodic table in water or an aqueous alkali at 20W150°C under atmospheric pressure to give malonic acid or its derivative. The aqueous alkali accelerates the reaction rate and gives the objective compounds in a high yield.
USE: Raw materials for organic synthesis, particularly for medicines, pesticides, adhesives, perfumes, etc. Surface treatments for aluminum.
