Abstract

PURPOSE: The reaction between chloromethyltrialkylsilane and a cyanate salt readily affords the titled compound in high yield, which is a precursor of a trialkylsilyldiazomethane used in the homologation reaction of a carbonyl compound.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction of a chlorotrialkylsilane of R3SiCH2Cl (R is 1W5C alkyl) with a cyanate such as potassium cyanate is conducted in dimethylformamide in the presence of tetraethylammonium iodide at 50W150°C and ammonia is made to act on the reaction mixture at -20W30°C to produce the objective compound. The amount of the cyanate is 1W2 equivalents per 1 equivalent of the chloromethyltrialkylsilane and tetraethylammonium iodide is 0.01W0.5 equivalent.
USE: The compound of formula IV is converted to a trialkylsilyldiazomethane of formula V and the product is used in an improved process of the Arndt-Eistert synthesis.
