Abstract

PURPOSE:To form a magnetic recording medium having high coercive force with good economy by laminating an underlying layer of a nonmagnetic metal, magnetic layer and protective lubricating layer successively by sputtering on a nonmagnetic substrate which is coated with a specific plating layer and is heated to and held at a specific temp. in a vacuum. CONSTITUTION:The nonmagnetic substrate 1 which is coated with the electroless plating layer 2 of an Ni-P alloy is heated to a >=100 deg.C and <=200 deg.C range in the vacuum. While this temp. is maintained, the underlying layer 3 of the nonmagnetic metal consisting of Cr, the magnetic layer 4 consisting of a Co alloy system, and the protective lubricating layer 5 are successively formed and laminated by sputtering on this substrate 1. The coercive force is thereby enhanced and the magnetic recording medium having the high coercive force is formed with the good economy without increasing the thickness of the layer 3 and without increasing argon pressure at the time of sputtering.
