Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium which fluctuates less in characteristics and has high reliability by providing a surface protective layer consisting of laminated films of a hydrogenated amorphous carbon film and amorphous fluorocarbon film by a plasma polymn. method on the surface of a magnetic layer consisting of a thin ferromagnetic metallic alloy film. CONSTITUTION:The surface protective layer 14 consisting of the laminated films of the hydrogenated amorphous carbon film 14a and amorphous fluorocarbon film 14b which are successively deposited by the plasma polymn. method is provided on the surface of the magnetic layer 13 consisting of the thin ferromagnetic metallic alloy film formed on a nonmagnetic substrate 11. The laminated films formed with the hydrogenated amorphous carbon [(a-C(H)] film having high mechanical strength and hardness and the amorphous fluorocarbon [a-C(F)] film having excellent lubricity and corrosion resistance thereon or the mixed films composed of a-C(H) and a-C(F) thereon are provided with the respective performances of a-C(H) and a-C(F), by which the surface protective layer having excellent wear resistance and corrosion resistance is formed.
