Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve corrosion resistance by forming a ferromagnetic layer on a substrate having a columnar underlying layer or substrate having grooves on the surface, oxidizing the surface of this magnetic layer and providing a protective lubricating layer of a carbon system thereon. CONSTITUTION:After the ferromagnetic layer 2 is formed on the substrate having the columnar underlying layer or the substrate 3 having the grooves on the surface, the surface of the magnetic layer 2 is oxidized and the protective lubricating layer 1 consisting of the carbon system is provided thereon. The surface of the magnetic layer 2 is coated with the oxide layer 4 and particularly the inside of valleys 5 has only the oxide layer 4 which is made nonmagnetic. The magnetic layer 2 consisting of the ferromagnetic metal does not exist in the valleys. The corrosion from the thin part of the corrosion preventive protective layer is thereby suppressed and the magnetic recording medium having the excellent corrosion resistance is obtd.
