Abstract

PURPOSE:To form a magnetic recording medium having high durability without degrading corrosion resistance by laminating a nonmagnetic protective layer consisting of a required oxide on a magnetic layer consisting of a thin ferromagnetic metallic film and subjecting the surface of the magnetic layer exposed by polishing the surface of said protective layer to an oxidation treatment. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic recording layer 2 consisting of the thin ferromagnetic metallic film is formed on a nonmagnetic substrate 1 and further, the protective layer 3 consisting of the oxide contg. at least one metal elements among the components of the layer 2 is laminated thereon. The projecting parts 4 of the layer 3 are removed by polishing to expose 5 part of the layers 2. The surface of the exposed layer 2 is subjected to the oxidation treatment to form the oxide layer 5 which contains the same metal element as the metal element of the layer 3, has the good affinity to the layer 3 and is hardly strippable is formed.
