Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the adhesion of a nonmagnetic substrate and magnetic layer and to improve durability by forming an underlying layer consisting of an alloy composed of titanium and silicon the substrate and providing a magnetic layer consisting of a cobalt alloy directly or via an intermediate layer thereof. CONSTITUTION:The substrate 1 which consists basically of a metal, alloy or inorg. material and has heat resistance is used. The substrate 1 is heated to >=300 deg.C and the underlying layer 2 consisting of the Ti-Si alloy is formed by a sputtering method on the substrate 1; further, the magnetic layer 4 consisting of a thin ferromagnetic metallic film is provided directly or via the intermediate layer 3 consisting of Cr or the alloy essentially consisting of Cr on the underlying layer 2. Since the adhesion of the thin films constituting the medium to each other is thereby improved, the durability is greatly improved; in addition, the magnetic layer having good crystal growability is formed. The adhesion of the underlying layer 2 and the magnetic layer 4 is poor and the effect of improving the magnetic characteristics is low if the heating temp. of the substrate 1 or the heating treatment temp. after formation of the underlying layer 2 is below 300 deg.C.
