Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve magnetic characteristics by laminating a ferromagnetic layer consisting of a prescribed metal on an underlying layer consisting of a prescribed metal and diffusing and segregating the underlying metal into the ferromagnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:The underlying layer consisting of the metal selected from Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Si, Ta, Ti, V, and W or the alloy thereof is formed on a nonmagnetic substrate. The ferromagnetic layer consisting of Co or essentially consisting of Co is laminated thereon. After this substrate is heated to the crystal phase transformation point (-400 deg.C) of the material forming the ferromagnetic material or above, the substrate is cooled under impression of a magnetic field in the horizontal direction (circumferential direction of a disk) to diffuse and segregate the underlying metal into the magnetic layer. The substrate is preferably subjected to a previous heating treatment at >=700 deg.C in this case. A glass or ceramic substrate is used for the substrate.
